Men's Lacrosse Drops Top 20 Matchup Due to Denison's Defense

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- On a rainy, foggy night in central Ohio, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse couldn't get the offense to flow.

No. 18/20 Denison University upended No. 13/19 John Carroll in a battle of top 20 teams on Wednesday evening, 11-5.

The Blue Streaks stood even with the Big Red in the early going, but a 6-0 Denison run broke John Carroll's back in the first loss of the 2022 campaign for the men of University Heights.

The Big Red got on the board in the first minute, scoring the opener of a game that was delayed over an hour due to stormy conditions in Granville. Carter Pavain tallied JCU's first of the contest at 9:56 in response.

Denison retook the lead soon thereafter, 2-1. A Brendan Whitty goal, off a Morgan Morrell assist, knotted it up with 6:53 remaining in the first quarter. But then the Big Red machine got going.

For the remainder of the first half, Denison managed to shut down JCU's high-powered offense. John Carroll struggled to take advantage of chances, as passes often didn't make it to the danger areas.

In the meantime, Denison powered up the offense, scoring 6 straight in the rest of the half. Denison possessed a 6-2 lead after the first quarter, and then tallied a couple in the second quarter. A last-second goal before the half provided a dagger, as John Carroll trailed heading into the locker room, 8-2.

Denison marked down the first goal of the half before Ian Flynn finally ended the run at the 11:55 mark of the third quarter. But Denison then added a couple more down the stretch of the third, carrying a comfortable 11-3 lead into the fourth.

The Blue Streaks tallied the only goals of the fourth quarter, as Jared Gorenflo scored the first one, off a Whitty assist. Tanner Gill-Snow slimmed the margin to 11-5, but it would narrow no further.

Despite letting in 11 goals, Jon Gaglio had a solid game in net, making 11 saves as he faced 38 shots. Many of the team stats were nearly even including groundballs (25-22 Denison), saves (11-10 JCU), and turnovers (17-16 JCU). John Carroll also did a great job clearing the ball, making 27-of-28. Unfortunately, JCU couldn't rev up enough offense to stay in it.

Now 6-1 on the year, John Carroll will get back to it on Saturday, heading south to play Marietta.
