Women's Lacrosse Uses 9-0 Run to Surge to Victory over Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio -- Following a trip to Florida, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse brought the beautiful weather back up to Ohio as they took on Oberlin College in an afternoon home opener for the Yeowomen.

Spurred by a strong finish to the end of the first half and a strong start to the second half, the Blue Streaks came away with an 18-15 win, earning their first victory of the season.

Oberlin got off to a very fast start by scoring the game's first two goals in four minutes of play.

John Carroll got on the scoreboard, though, with two goals of their own. Olivia Gerlach scored first at 11:40 off a Jenna Ginsberg assist. And just over a minute later, Alex Heishman found the back of the net at 9:52. Oberlin sandwiched a goal in there as well.

But the Yeowomen scored three goals in the last seven minutes of the first period to go into the second quarter up 6-2.

The second stanza began as a back-and-forth affair but ended with one side taking control offensively. Heishman opened the scoring with a free position conversion at 12:37, but Oberlin responded with a goal of their own less than a minute later. Heishman scored yet again at 10:33, but the Yeowomen answered yet again with a pair of scores to make it 9-4.

The last six minutes of the second quarter, however, belonged to the Blue Streaks. At 5:33, Shannon Burdick found the back of the net off a free position opportunity. Goals from Gerlach and Ginsberg sandwiched a 4-0 run to end the first half that was capped by a Carly Ross free position goal at 0:39 to make it 9-8.

The strong play from the Blue & Gold translated into the start of the second half where they were up to more of the same. Five goals from Gerlach (Ginsberg assist), Caylin Perryman (Heishman assist), Gerlach again (Ginsberg assist), Ginsberg, and Ross gave JCU its first lead of the day.

By the 8:38 mark in the third, the Blue Streaks found themselves ahead 13-9 and on a 9-0 scoring run.

Nevertheless, Oberlin finally snapped the fervid Blue Streak run with a goal. Burdick replied with a score off an Olivia Hanulak assist, but the Yeowomen answered right back with two goals of their own.

The Blue Streaks did end the third period strongly, however, as Heishman poured in her fourth goal of the day off a free position shot to end the third quarter with a 15-12 advantage.

Burdick added a goal off a Ginsberg assist less than 30 seconds into the final quarter. Oberlin responded with two goals to trim the Blue Streak lead to 16-14, but Heishman tallied another two scores to her name (one off a Burdick feed) to seal the victory.

The Blue & Gold outshot the Yeowomen 45-26 and had a 22-17 advantage in ground balls. Individually, Heishman finished the game with six goals and an assist; matching her season totals heading into today. Ginsberg added five points with two goals and a trio of assists. Gerlach etched four scores to her name, and Burdick added three.

JCU improves their record to 1-3 and will travel to nationally-ranked Denison on March 23 before they begin Ohio Athletic Conference play.
