Late Game Miscues Cost Blue Streaks Both Extra Inning Games vs. Albion

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- After two off days, the John Carroll baseball team extended their losing streak in Florida to four as they dropped two extra inning games with leads to Albion in both teams' first meeting since 2005 at Lake Myrtle Park Field #5 in Auburndale.

In game one, John Carroll got on the board first in the second inning as Erik Daugenti brought home Victor Glaser on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

Albion would tie it with a solo home run in the fourth inning, but the Blue Streaks answered back in the fifth with a Connor Mayle bomb to make it 2-1.

JCU tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a Glaser RBI single and a Jack Beiter sacrifice fly to extend their advantage to 4-1.

Mitch Midea, who went six strong innings with only one walk, five hits, and 10 strikeouts, was relieved in the seventh after giving up a leadoff double to get the Britons on.  Jack Bennett came in and gave up a two run blast to the next batter to make the score 4-3.

With plenty of momentum, Albion's Justin Charron hit yet another home run in the following at bat for the Britons to tie it up 4-4.

Despite putting another base runner on with no outs, John Carroll managed to get the three critical outs on a foul out, strikeout, and fly out to keep the score even.

The Blue Streaks came up empty handed in bottom part of the seventh and allowed an Albion run in the eighth inning extra frame on a fielder's choice to make it 5-4.  On the play, John Carroll's third baseman Jared Orwell fielded a grounder and threw home but the ball squirted out of catcher Glaser's glove as he could not properly secure the ball.

JCU could not muster any offense afterwards as their first two batters struck out.  While Daugenti hit a single with two outs, the subsequent hitter went down swinging which preserved the victory for the Britons.

Albion had nine hits compared to the Blue Streaks' four while John Carroll committed four errors.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning of a back and forth game two as Matt Springer touched home on a Joe Olsavsky groundout and the Britons on a fielder's choice to even it at 1-1.

Albion then took the lead on a double in the second to make the score 2-1, but JCU answered back in the following inning with an Olsavsky RBI double and a Logan LaMere single to make it 3-2.

The Britons got on the board next with a two run home run to take the lead right back in the bottom half of the third, 4-3.  John Carroll would then tie it right back up at 4-4 in the fifth with a Henry Haracz double.

JCU then tacked on another run in the sixth with another Olsavsky double to take a 5-4 advantage.

Albion jumped at their next chance at bat as the leadoff batter Sawyer Shotwell reached on an error and then moved into scoring position on a passed ball.  A sacrifice bunt moved him to third and scored on an RBI single to tie it up at 5-5.

John Carroll did have a chance in the seventh to break the tie as Mayle singled and reached second on an error with one out.  However, pinch hitter Glaser popped out and Daugenti struck out to end their threat.

The Blue Streaks could not get anything going offensively for the rest of the game as none of their four baserunners in that stretch could get past first base.

The 10th inning sealed the deal for Albion as they scored on a walk-off RBI single to seal the sweep.

JCU starter Andrew Steele went four innings and gave up six hits and two walks while striking out three batters.  Matthew Aukerman then threw five innings in long relief and gave up only two hits and did not give up a walk.

Olsavsky led the way for the Blue Streaks as he went 4-6 with three RBIs in the game while his team collected 12 hits.

John Carroll will look to take its final game of the Florida trip against the Britons on Saturday, March 12 at historic Henley Field in Lakeland, spring training home of the MLB's Detroit Tigers from 1934-1942 and 1946-1965.  First pitch is scheduled for 10am.
