Women's Basketball Wins vs. Denison on the Road

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- In the last gasps of November, John Carroll Women's Basketball hit the road for a Wednesday evening affair.

The #24 Blue Streaks took care of business at Denison University, improving to 3-1 on the year.

John Carroll started fast and didn't look back in a 67-59 conquest on the road.

The opening minutes saw the Blue Streaks construct a nice lead. Jaylen Hoffmann opened things with an and-one on a layup, so with the resulting free throw, JCU got on the board first. Kaelyn Underwood and Carmen Heuker added buckets for a 7-0 lead before the Big Red could tie their shoes. Two Underwood free throws extended the advantage to nine before Denison finally got on the board at the 3:24 mark of the first quarter.

Hoffmann tallied a 3-pointer at 1:24 and Ava Ryncarz hit a triple with 24 seconds left in the opener to push the lead to 15-4, though Denison slimmed it to 15-7 entering the second stanza thanks to a last-second three.

Ryncarz kept nailing deep shots in the second quarter, helping John Carroll push the pace. Denison fell behind, 28-15, by the midpoint of the quarter. While the hosts did find somewhat of a groove on offense as the period elapsed, the Blue Streaks did not take their foot off the gas pedal, firing forward.

Olivia Giunta hit a nice jumper late in the second to set the score at 36-22 JCU entering the halftime break.

Underwood hit a jumper to start the scoring in the third quarter. But from there, it was all Big Red. Denison fired on an 11-0 run before it was ended by a Hallie Landies free throw at the 5:40 mark. Just over 30 seconds later, the Big Red made it a one possession affair.

But John Carroll clung to the lead as the clock ticked down in the third, with free throws by Underwood and Giunta plus four points from Hoffmann keeping the visitors in front. JCU grasped a narrow 51-48 lead entering the fourth.

Hoffmann and Underwood ushered the offense to start the quarter, helping JCU gallop to a 6-0 run. From there, the lead never dwindled below two possessions. The Blue Streaks outscored the Big Red in the final quarter, 16-11.

Underwood and Hoffmann led the scoring for JCU with 16 points apiece. Ryncarz surpassed double digits for the first time in her career, registering 14 on the night. Landies finished with 9 points.

Hoffmann led JCU in rebounding with a career-high 7 boards, plus a career-best 7 assists (to add to her career-high 16 points).
Heuker tabbed 6 boards, too.

As a team, JCU outshot Denison,
44.3% to 34.3%, though the Big Red was a red-hot 7-of-15 from downtown. JCU narrowly won the battle on the boards, 42-41. While Denison did come close, John Carroll never trailed.

The Blue Streaks begin conference play on Saturday, hosting Muskingum at 4 pm.
