Wrestling Betters the Purple Raiders for the Second Year in a Row

The Blue Streaks put on a great show in the home opener.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Wrestling team has won their first Ohio Athletic Conference dual of the season, beating Mount Union 31-15.

This is the first time since 2008 that the Blue Streaks have beaten Mount Union for back-to-back seasons.

The Blue Streaks had a dominant performance, scoring two technical falls and a major decision. With only one win being less than a 7-point differential, John Carroll showed that they were hard at work during the offseason.

The first win of the night came from Andrew Perelka (133 pounds), who beat Drew Magness 11-4. Last Saturday, Perelka tied the all time pin record at JCU, and while he did not break the record tonight, he had a great showing in the first official dual of the season.

Both Patrick McGraw (157 lbs.) and Luke Reicosky (165 lbs.) scored technical falls tonight, both showing how hard they've worked. McGraw won 16-0 (5:56) and Reicosky won 17-0 (5:53). McGraw and Reicosky, along with Perelka and Devera, were NCAA national qualifiers last season, with Reicosky being an All-American

Kale Buckiso (149 lbs.) scored a major decision, beating Riley Kneeland 13-5. Now in his sophomore year, this is Buckiso's 7th win this season.

Making his varsity debut, Caiden Rodgers (184 lbs.) beat Nick Chaddock 4-1 in a hard fought match.

"I think I wrestled satisfactory," said Rodgers. "I don't think I wrestled poorly, but at the same time I didn't exceed any expectations. There's still a lot I have to do."

John Carroll competes again this weekend, November 19, at the Olivet Comet Duals in Olivet, Michigan.
