Volleyball Tripped Up in Short Road Trip to Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND -- Following a special hot stretch, John Carroll Volleyball is in the midst of a cold spell.

The Blue Streaks are missing a key piece or two, and against a top-notch Case Western Reserve team, were edged in three sets.

John Carroll lost a 3-set battle with the Spartans in a quick Friday night roadtrip: 22-25, 21-25, 18-25.

The opening set proved to be the closest of the evening. The visitors leaped out to a 4-3 lead before the Spartans came roaring back with a 5-point run, spurring a JCU timeout. The Blue Streaks chipped away at the lead, erasing it at 16-16. At 19-18 JCU, the hosts burned a timeout. After the regrouping, the Spartans broke the Blue Streaks' backs with a 5-0 run. A JCU timeout couldn't stem the tide, so JCU dropped the opener.

The Spartans leaped out to a 7-3 start in the second set. John Carroll responded in a typical fashion for this season, battling back to even at 8-8, leading to a CWRU timeout. The Spartans later burned another timeout, trailing 16-13. In a closely contested stretch run, the Spartans saw big contribuitions from the Ngo sisters (Amanda and Jennifer). A 4-0 CWRU run proved particularly impactful down the stretch, as the hosts won a number of narrowly contested points. Momentum stood on the hosts' side in a 7-1 run to end the second set.

Like the first two sets, the early stages of the third set was close, at 8-8. But a 5-1 jaunt by the Spartans hindered the Blue Streaks. Despite a pair of timeouts, the Blue Streaks could not halt a strong Spartans squad. The Ally Bartolone-Cassi Calamunci connection helped make it closer, but a 25-18 loss ended JCU's night.

Calamunci topped the JCU effort with 14 kills, along with a team-high 16 digs. Jennifer Follmer also hit double digits in kills with 10. Maddie Maziarz and Ally Bartolone tied for 19 assists. Payton Miozzi chipped in 15 digs.

The Spartans won the battle at the net, outhitting JCU, .165 to .080. The hosts also enjoyed a decided advantage in blocks, 10-4.

The Blue Streaks drop to 15-5 on the year following the second loss in three nights. John Carroll will regroup and get set for a rivalry conference contest with Baldwin Wallace at home next Wednesday.
