Yellow Jackets Deal JCU Volleyball a Tough Home Defeat

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll Volleyball was looking forward to being at home to get back on track against the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets after two losses upended JCU's 10-match winning streak.

Baldwin Wallace ended the Blue Streaks' hopes of getting back on track on Wednesday evening.

The Yellow Jackets took the win tonight after 4 close sets. John Carroll took set one 25-20, but Baldwin Wallace won the following three sets 25-20, 25-17, and 25-19.

The Blue Streaks started strong in set one until the Yellow Jackets took back a 7-3 lead. Both teams had multiple attack errors and traded points to tie it at 20 apiece. John Carroll took advantage of Baldwin Wallace's attack errors to take the first set, 25-20.

Set two flipped the script, with the Blue Streaks taking an 8-3 lead before losing the point. A 10-1 run by the Yellow Jackets made it 19-12 before a kill by Cassi Calamunci got John Carroll back the serve. John Carroll cut the Baldwin Wallace lead to 20-18, but it was not enough to win set two, losing 25-20 to make it a 1-1 match.

A back-and-forth battle ensued at the beginning of set three. The set was tied 7-7 before Baldwin Wallace pulled ahead to 15-7. The Blue Streaks were not going down without a fight, slimming the deficit to 17-15 before losing the serve on an attack error. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of John Carroll's weak spots to take set three 25-17.

Eager to tie it back up, the Blue Streaks came out hard in set four, taking a 7-3 lead before losing the serve on a nice kill by Baldwin Wallace. Both teams battled before the Yellow Jackets pulled ahead to 17-13.

John Carroll tried to get out ahead, but Baldwin Wallace continued to take advantage of the Blue Streaks' defensive holes to maintain their lead in the set. The Blue Streaks were unable to pull out a win in set four, losing 25-19.

Calamunci led the team with 14 kills and 15 digs. Ally Bartolone topped the Blue Streaks with 20 assists. Kendra Dziubinski tied Calamunci with three block assists.

Baldwin Wallace had a significant advantage in kills 50-37, and their hitting percentage was  .169 to John Carroll's .103.

The Blue Streaks will remain at home this weekend, taking on Ohio Northern on Saturday, October 15 at 1 pm.
