Women's Soccer Senior Day Turns into 2OT Instant Classic 3-3 Tie

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After striking for two early goals, John Carroll University Women's Soccer was unable to keep the momentum rolling on Senior Day, as Ohio Wesleyan came roaring back for a tie.

Before the game, all seven John Carroll Women's Soccer seniors were honored for their achievements over their time at John Carroll. The Blue Streaks would not be able to secure a win on their day, as they would have to settle for a tie. The Blue Streaks and Battling Bishops locked into a 3-3 stalemate that will go down as an instant classic.

Starting off, the Blue Streaks got on the board two minutes into the game. Senior Brittany Dufalla found the bottom left of the net on a penalty kick.

Then, just 23 seconds later, junior Lauren Gumeny fired a shot into the high left corner of the goal off an assist by senior Rachel Larkin, giving John Carroll an early 2-0 advantage.

"It was a great effort, honestly," said JCU Head Coach Michael Marich. "We came out and scored some great early goals."

After the early scoring barrage, the Battling Bishops rattled off four shots on goal with Blue Streak goalkeeper Danielle DelGiudice coming up with perfect saves each time.

But with time dwindling in the first half's final minute of play, the Blue Streaks came up just short on another save, as Ohio Wesleyan's Cami Womeldorf found Makayla Watkins for a goal to make the score 2-1 going into halftime.

Coming out after half, neither team could manufacture much offensively, as both defenses stepped up to control the tempo.

That changed quite rapidly as in the 79th minute, however, as Watkins found the back of the net for her second Ohio Wesleyan goal of the match, evening the score at two a piece.

A little less than four minutes later, John Carroll's Macey Malinky tapped a quick pass to Dufalla, who rang home her second goal of the match to put the Blue Streaks back on top 3-2.

While it looked like John Carroll would be able to hold on for the win with the lead and only seven minutes left on the clock, the Battling Bishops had other plans. The visitors tied the score at 3-3, as Ireland Nowak found Avery Maxeiner for Maxeiner's third goal of the season.

After the Blue Streaks dropped the lead on two occasions, Coach Marich said, "Ultimately, we have to continue to work defensively to not give up a lead to get the win in the end."

After both teams combined for three goals in the final 12 minutes of play in the second half, each team was only able to get one shot in the first overtime as the defenses locked down any scoring chances.

In the second overtime period, neither team could come up with a game winning goal. John Carroll rattled off two shots on goal that Battling Bishop goalkeeper Taylor Floyd denied while Ohio Wesleyan registered one shot that was off target, ending the game in a tie.

For the game, DelGiudice finished with six saves for the Blue Streaks while Floyd had eight for the Battling Bishops.

John Carroll (4-2-1) will travel across town for their next match as they take on Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday September 22.
