Late game two scoring run by the Berg crushes Blue Streaks chance at Saturday sweep

TIFFIN, Ohio -- They were only one inning away from bringing the Saturday brooms out.

For 13 innings, the John Carroll University Softball pitching staff was stellar, but the Heidelberg Student Princes had a sixth inning rally in game two to ensure the Blue Streaks didn't sweep them in their home park. On May 1, the Blue Streaks split the twin-bill with Heidelberg at Frann's Field. In game one, John Carroll won 3-1 but dropped game two 5-2.

The Blue Streaks fall to 8-23 on the season and will host Heidelberg tomorrow for a double header at Bracken Field.

Game One

A fifth inning effort that scored two runs secured the Blue Streaks their eighth win of the season.

With the score locked at one, Crista Nativio led off the top of the fifth inning with a single. Then, John Carroll took advantage of a pair of Heidelberg mistakes and aggressive base running to take the lead.

Gracie Bressoud put the ball in play, but the Student Princes missed the throw on over to first. Meanwhile, Nativio scored from first with another fielding error. JCU took the 2-1 advantage.

On the following at-bat, Kasyn Scarantine hit an RBI single through the right side to score Bressoud for the two-run lead.

The pitching performance was key for the Blue Streaks. Katie DeBord was efficient on the mound, as she only allowed six hits and one earned run in six innings. DeBord also recorded a strikeout in her sixth win of the season. Madison Eagle came in the seventh inning and retired all three batters to seal the victory and earn her first save of the season.

John Carroll initially fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first but in the ensuing inning, Gabby Hougan scored on the final play to tie it at one. The Blue Streaks effort in the fifth was necessary for the win.

Bressoud and Nativio both went 3-3 at the plate and Gurley and Scarantine each notched a pair of hits.

Game Two

The Blue Streaks only trailed for one total inning. Unfortunately, that was the one that mattered most.

After a scoreless three innings, a pair of doubles in the top of the fourth gave JCU the initial 2-0 lead.

Kristen Jesberger led off the inning with a single and two at-bats later, Jess Lichota hit an RBI double for the initial 1-0 lead. Then, Maddie Traub reached base on an RBI double that gave JCU the 2-0 advantage.

Heidelberg saved all its scoring of the day for the bottom of the sixth. The Student Princes tacked on five runs to go ahead 5-2. The Berg's scoring output spoiled what was an impressive day for the JCU pitching staff.

In innings 2-5, the Blue Streaks throwers held Heidelberg to only two hits. However, a handful of hits and a pair of errors by JCU in the sixth inning was the kryptonite. In the top of the seventh, the Blue and Gold bats cooled, and Heidelberg put the win on ice.

Danielle Orendi had a stellar day in the circle. She went five scoreless innings, recorded a strikeout and only allowed one hit. Offensively, Jesberger had a pair of hits and scored a run.
