Softball Splits Home Double Header With Heidelberg

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Persistence pays off as John Carroll takes game two after falling to Heidelberg in game one.

Strong defense and a red hot eight-run inning allowed the Blue Streaks to come back in game two, following a loss, and split the series with the Student Princes. Heidelberg took game one 6-1, however John Carroll stormed back to capture game two, 8-3.

JCU improves to 9-25 on the year and will host Muskingum College next Saturday for a double header at Bracken Field.

Game One

John Carroll was led by Katie Debord pitching in the first game of today's double header. The Blue Streaks got off to a slow start going down two runs in the top of the first inning. Over the next two innings John Carroll settled its nerves in the field and kept the Student Princes off the scoreboard to hold the deficit at two.

In the bottom of the third, Gracie Bressoud sparked the momentum with a bunt to get on base for the Blue Streaks first hit of the game. She would go on to use her speed, stealing second and third base on two past balls. Then, Kasyn Scarantine would make contact to allow Bressoud to score, cutting the deficit to one run. JCU would head into the top of the fourth down 2-1 but feeling very much in the game.

In the top of the fourth, junior Kristen Jesberger made a great play to flip the ball to Debord at home plate to save a run. Jesberger also went on to throw a runner out at second to end the inning. However, Heidelberg added a run to stretch the lead to 3-1.

The Blue streaks continued to battle, doing a good job of minimizing the damage from tough situations. Heidelberg added one run to stretch the lead to 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Student Princes were consistent with their bats throughout and stretched the deficit to 6-1 in the top of the seventh off a two-run homerun. For JCU, they did a great job again limiting the damage in the field, but ultimately could not build enough momentum on offense to overcome the early deficit. The Blue Streaks were able to get on base, but could not capitalize, leaving nine runners on base throughout.

The Blue Streaks would drop game one of the double header 6-1 against the Student Prince's. Nativio and Jesberger led the offense both going 2-3. Bressoud also scored JCU's only run and racked up two stolen bases in the process.

Game Two

The second game of the double header started out much different for the Blue Streaks. With a 0-0 tie heading into the bottom of the second inning, JCU started off with two outs and two walks. From there, Nativio sparked a huge two out run. The Blue Streaks went on to rattle off six hits and score a total of eight runs to take an 8-0 lead heading into the top of the third inning.

Following the big run, JCU's defense remained strong behind Madison Eagle's consistent pitching. The Blue Streaks held Heidelberg to four scoreless innings to begin the game before giving up one run in the fifth. However, JCU still remained very much in the driver's seat still up 8-1.

In the top of sixth, the Student Princes were able to cut the deficit more, scoring two runs, but the Blue Streaks were able to fend off any more damage to head into the bottom of the sixth up 8-3.

Heading into the top of the seventh, JCU brought in Danielle Orendi to close the game out. She was able to do just that, facing only three batters and striking one out.

While the bats caught on fire in the second inning, it was the consistent pitching and fielding throughout that allowed the Blue Streaks to prevail. JCU went on to win game two by a score of 8-3 behind a total team effort. The key stat in this one was the eight RBI's driven in by the JCU bats.

Scarantine led the way at the plate for the Blue Streaks going 3-3 along with a pair of RBI's. Gabby Hougan and Jess Lichota also chipped in two RBI's a piece. Eagle gets the win, pitching six innings, and allowing just five hits and three runs over that span.
