Softball Swept by Marietta in Tough Luck Saturday

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Blue Streaks dropped their third and fourth games in a 2-day span in Marietta this afternoon.

In Game 1, the Blue Streaks fell in a close one to the Pioneers, 10-9. In Game 2, Marietta defeated John Carroll, 8-0.

The Blue Streaks dropped to 4-13, 4-11 in OAC play. The Pioneers improved their record to 7-9 this spring.

Game 1

The Blue Streaks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first off a pair of RBIs from Emma Gurley and Mallory Stonebraker.

The Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the frame with a 3-run homer from Jess Brown to take a 3-2 lead.

Lauren Swierczewski extended the lead to 4-2 with a solo homerun of her own in the bottom of the third.

JCU responded quickly in the top of the fourth with four runs of their own to take a 6-4 lead. Crista Nativio, Kristen Jesberger and Gurley were responsible for three RBIs with the fourth run scored by Gracie Bressoud on a wild pitch.

Marietta responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth off a Swierczewski single to cut the Blue Streak lead to 6-5.

After a bases loaded walk tied the game up at six in the bottom of the fifth, Kylie Daugherty hit a grand slam to extend the Marietta lead to 10-6.

The Blue Streaks would fight back with two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh, but would come up short, losing the game, 10-9.

Katie DeBord dropped the decision for JCU.

Game 2

After three scoreless innings, the Pioneers opened up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Hanna Richardson.

Kylie Daughtery continued her hot day at the plate with a 3-run homer to extend the Marietta lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

A Hailey Maher double would score Jordan Pallay in the bottom of the sixth. A sixth run would be scored as a result of a fielding error, followed by a 2-run double by Swierczewski, as the Pioneers took a 8-0 lead to finish the game.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action next Saturday in University Heights, as they take on crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace University.
