Softball Swept Via Heartbreaker in Game 1 and Shutout in Game 2

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The winds of fate have not been kind to John Carroll University Softball this season.

Despite a very valiant effort, the Blue Streaks dropped two to Baldwin Wallace on a windy day at Bracken Field on Saturday, 4-3 and 6-0.

The Blue Streaks nearly nabbed Game 1, but fell short in a 10-inning thriller. The Yellow Jackets pushed past JCU in Game 2 with outstanding pitching and a pair of strong innings at the plate.

The Blue and Gold drop to 4-15 overall, 4-13 in OAC play, having lost nine in a row.

Game 1

The weekend opener in the 4-game rivalry series with the Yellow Jackets proved to be a marathon battle of the pitchers after a bit of early offense.

The game opened with a BW walk, which cost the Blue Streaks a run after a stolen base and a single. The Yellow Jackets carried the precipitous lead into the third, when the JCU bats came alive.

Gabby Hougan opened things up with a single to right center. Crista Nativio kept things going with a double to center, pushing Hougan to third. After a JCU strikeout, Kasyn Scarantine came up in the clutch, firing a single up the middle. Scarantine was thrown out at second on the throw, but her heroics scored Nativio and Hougan to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Danielle Orendi found a groove for the Blue Streaks after the first, cruising through 1-2-3 innings in the third and fourth frames.

BW star pitcher Nikki Camarati also bore down with authority. Krisen Jesberger managed to single through the right side to open the fourth, but Camarati generated back-to-back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

The Yellow Jackets evened the score in the top of the sixth after being silenced for several innings. Bridie Bricker homered to left center, knotting the contest at 2-2. The score would stay that way for quite some time.

The bottom of the sixth did look promising for JCU, as Jesberger reached on an error and Mallory Stonebraker walked with 2 outs. But Camarati summoned a strikeout to get out of trouble.

The visitors got a runner aboard with 1 out in the top of the seventh with a single, but Jesberger caught the BW runner in the act, thwarting a stolen base attempt. JCU went 1-2-3 in the seventh, and the contest went to extra innings.

A double and a walk in the top of the eighth looked to be a promising 2-out rally to take the lead in the eighth for Baldwin Wallace. But yet again, Orendi escaped, coaxing a popout to get to the bottom half of the inning with the game still tied.

The Blue Streaks managed to load the bases with 2 outs in the eighth, with a chance to end the game in dramatic fashion. But once again, Camarati notched a strikeout, showing why she's the defending OAC Pitcher of the Week.

The ninth also ended without a run scored, so the game headed to the 10th. The Blue Streaks quickly found themselves in trouble.

A walk, single, and error loaded the bases for Baldwin Wallace with no outs. Madison Eagle experienced the unenviable task of entering with the bases juiced. She quickly got an infield fly, but then walked in a run. Eagle got out number two on a flyout, but then a walk allowed another run to score. Eagle struck out the next batter, but BW's two runs put JCU's backs against the wall with a 4-2 score.

Camarati garnered two quick outs, but the Blue Streaks were not going quietly. Emma Gurley singled to center and reached second on a wild pitch. Jesberger's bat again proved clutch, as the catcher doubled down the right field line to get Gurley in. But Camarati coaxed a flyout to end the game.

Orendi took the loss, despite a marvelous 9-inning start, striking out six and allowing 4 runs, 2 earned. Camarati advanced to 9-1 with a 10-inning masterpiece, striking out 15 batters and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits.

Game 2

The backend of the Saturday twinbill featured early offense, but unfortunately, only for the Yellow Jackets.

The visitors jumped on the Blue Streaks early with a double and single. After a strikeout, BW grounded into a fielder's choice to score one. Then Bricker struck again for the Yellow Jackets, plating a run with a single to left center. BW enjoyed a 2-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the first.

The Yellow Jackets did critical damage to John Carroll in the top of the third. Back-to-back-to-back singles scored one run, and an Ashley Matousek double cashed in another.  After a strikeout and a lineout, a JCU error allowed another run to score. Then on a Lexy Coggings stolen base to second, Matousek snuck home. BW enjoyed a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third.

Kasyn Scarantine tried to jumpstart JCU with a 2-out single and a stolen base, but Hannah Welling wiggled out of it without any runs. Welling was excellent all day.

Katie DeBord found her footing in the fourth, with a quick 1-2-3 frame in the frame. Kristen Jesberger and Mallory Stonebreaker singled to open the bottom of the fourth, but Welling again bore down to dash JCU's hopes.

Each team filed quick fifth frames. The Yellow Jackets threatened in the sixth, drawing a walk before Scarantine threw out a Yellow Jacket trying to steal second. A BW single and stolen base threatened JCU, but DeBord forced a lineout.

JCU and BW traded quick innings into the bottom of the sixth and the top of the seventh. Gabby Hougan tallied a single, but Welling finished off a 7-inning complete game.

Welling allowed just 6 hits and struck out 5, walking none. DeBord was charged with the loss, dropping to 3-9 after a solid 7-inning effort.

The Blue Streaks will get another crack at the Yellow Jackets on Sunday, heading to Berea for a 1 and 3:30 pm twinbill.
