Blake's Record Day Spurs Men's Lacrosse to Win over Muskingum

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- John Carroll University Men's Lacrosse gave yet another impressive performance to add to their 2021 campaign.

On April 24, John Carroll upended Muskingum, 25-3, at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, as the Blue Streaks improve to 11-1 on the season.

From start to finish, it was all John Carroll.

Bennett Gorman, Skyler Blake (Brendan Witty assist), and Matt Berdysiak (Whitty assist) converted the Blue & Gold's first three scores. Blake and Gorman (Whitty assist) each added another goal near the end of the first period to make it 5-0.

Then to open the second half, goals from Kevin Hack (Man-up; Berdysiak assist), and four consecutive goals from Blake (Hack & Whitty assists) made it 10-0. 

Shortly thereafter, two goals from Whitty (one Blake assist), two goals from Blake (Berdysiak & Tanner Gill-Snow assists), and one more strike from Whitty gave the Blue Streaks a 15-0 lead going into halftime.

Chandler Bankey opened the second half with a goal less than a minute into play. He was followed up by Blake (Alexander Sykas assist) and Nicholas Opett before Muskingum scored their first goal of the game, making it 18-1.

Vinny Fiorella (Blake assist), Reed Stuhlreyer (Morgan Morrell assist), and responded with scores before the Fighting Muskies found the net again to make it 21-2. Blake would score a school-record 11th goal of the game (Whitty assist) to make it 22-2 after three quarters.

Blake's record day concluded with his 12th goal of the afternoon (Whitty assist). Shortly after, Muskingum scored to make it 23-3.

Finally, a goal from Chandler Bankey and the first career goal for Matt Russo rounded out a superb day for John Carroll Men's Lacrosse as they ended the game on top 25-3.

Blake led the Blue and Gold offensively with a record day that featured 14 points (a school record 12 goals & 2 assists) and 16 shots on goal. Whitty finished with 9 points (three goals and a team-high six assists). In all, 13 different Blue Streaks finished with points in the scorebook.

Defensively, the Blue Streaks were spearheaded by Brendan Hein's 11 ground balls and perfect 12-of-12 day on faceoffs. Ian Venard finished with seven ground balls and 14 faceoff wins. Clayton Karam had six ground balls, and Sykas finished with five. In goal, Johnny Wilson III had three saves for JCU after Jon Gaglio gave JCU a clean sheet in the first half. 

John Carroll will finish the regular season on the afternoon of Saturday, May 1 when they face Otterbein at home.
