Blue Streaks Clinch Round One Bye in OAC Tournament After Defeating the Otterbein Cardinals

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the Blue Streaks honored their seven seniors for their outstanding accomplishments during their time at John Carroll. The senior class went out with a 14-2 victory over the Otterbein Cardinals in their last regular season game.

With the victory, the Blue Streaks lock up the number two seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. JCU will host an opponent to be determined on Thursday May 6.

The key to John Carroll's victory was their fast paced start and aggressive defense in the first quarter.

Five minutes into the game, graduate student Skyler Blake continued his impressive season notching the first goal of the day for the Blue and Gold. This put John Carroll up 1-0 at the 10:25 mark of the first quarter. The offense continued to be successful in the first quarter for John Carroll as they added another three goals courtesy of Kevin Hack, Matt Berdysiak and Tanner Gill-Snow.

In the second quarter, Otterbein responded quickly putting up their first goal of the game via Nawny Bailey.

John Carroll rapidly answered to the Cardinal's goal with Berdysiak scoring off of a Blake set up for Berdysiak's second goal of the game at the 10:51 mark of the second quarter. Jon Gaglio held the Cardinals scoreless the rest of the half, recording five saves. Bennett Gorman put the icing on the cake in the first quarter with a goal at the 2:31 mark. This gave John Carroll the 6-1 advantage heading into the locker room.

The third quarter continued to be effective for John Carroll as they posted five goals and did not give up a singular goal for the second quarter in the game. Three of the five goals came from seniors with Hack scoring his second goal of the game and Brendan Whitty capturing two as well. Matt Russo and Ian Flynn contributed the other two goals.

In the fourth and final quarter, Otterbein captured the first goal of the quarter at the 9:35 mark and their final attempt at a comeback. Cullen Zarek scored two goals for JCU in the fourth quarter and Morgan Moreell.

The Blue Streaks were led by Hack, Whitty, Zarek, and Berdysiak with two goals each, respectively. Gaglio led the way in net for John Carroll with nine saves on the day.

With the 14-2 victory, John Carroll improves to 12-1, 8-1 OAC. Stick with jcusports.com to find out more information on when the Blue Streaks will play in the OAC Tournament next week.
