Softball Suffers Pair of Defeats to Pioneers in Friday Twinbill

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Playing as the home team in Marietta on Friday, the John Carroll University Softball struggled to get the offense going, while the "road" Pioneers soared at the start of both games and never looked back.

In Game 1, the Blue Streaks fell to the Pioneers, 5-2. In Game 2, Marietta bested John Carroll, 13-1.

The Blue Streaks dropped to 4-11, 4-10 in OAC play. The Pioneers rose to 5-9 on the campaign.

Game 1

The Pioneers plated a run in the first to open things up. The leadoff hitter drew a walk and later scored thanks to a sacrifice and solidly hit single.

The Pioneers scored two more in the second, as an error allowed a run to score, and a hit later scored another.

After a quiet third, Marietta scored another pair of runs in the fourth. With two outs, Marietta scored a run on a single, after a fielder's choice and a popout. And then, a pair of wild pitches allowed another Pioneer to score. John Carroll went 1-2-3 in the 4th, so Marietta carried a 5-0 lead into the fifth.

The fifth frame elapsed without any offense. In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Streaks' offense came alive. Crista Nativio started things off with a 1-out walk, advancing to third on a Gracie Bressoud double to right field. Kasyn Scarantine then grounded out to shortstop, scratching across a run with Nativio scoring from third.

Emma Gurley slotted a single to right center, scoring Bressoud. But despite an error by Marietta, the Blue Streaks could not push any more runs across, heading into the 7th trailing by 3 runs.

Lauren Sienkiewicz drew a walk, threatening the Pioneers in the final frame. But Marietta locked it down, finishing off a win for Maddi Liston. Katie DeBord absorbed the loss for JCU.

Game 2

Katie DeBord and the Blue Streaks blew through the order in the first, but Marietta found its groove in the second.

The Pioneers opened the inning with a single and Kylie Daugherty blasted a 2-run homerun to left center for the early lead. Marietta stretched the lead further with a double and a pair of singles. DeBord stopped the bleeding at 4 runs.

In the bottom of the third, John Carroll's offense dug deep for a response. Gabby Hougan opened things up with a blooper single. Crista Nativio walked and Kasyn Scarantine reached on a hit by pitch. A wild pitch scored Hougan to get JCU on the board. After a flyout, Kristen Jesberger kept the inning alive and loaded the bases with 2 outs. Marietta called to the bullpen, bringing in Ashton Helmke. The Marietta junior escaped with a groundout to second, limiting the damage to 1 run, which turned the tides of the game.

Marietta did lots more damage in the fourth. Two singles and a sacrifice bunt set the stage for a crazy play. Taylor Watts tagged a hard-hit ball up the middle. The ball strangely hit the lip of the infield and bounced over the head of a Blue Streak outfielder, allowing Watts enough time to race around the bases for an inside the park home run. The unfortunate bounce took the wind out of JCU's sails.

Back-to-back-to-back Marietta singles scored another run, and one more scored on a passed ball. A laser homer to right center by Anna Swierczewski advanced the score to 11-1. Hailey Maher finalized the inning with a homer. Marietta scored one more in the fifth.

DeBord took the loss for the game, while Airyanna Mauer got the win for Marietta.

The Blue Streaks will get a shot at revenge vs. the Pioneers on Saturday, as John Carroll will play at Marietta again for a 1 and 3:30 pm doubleheader.
