Softball Suffers Sunday Sweep at the Hands of Purple Raiders

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On a chilly day in Northeast Ohio, John Carroll University Softball struggled to get the bats cooking.

Mount Union dealt the Blue Streaks a pair of losses at Bracken Field, 11-2 in Game 1 and 10-1 in Game 2.

With the loss, the Blue Streaks drop to 4-21 overall and 4-19 in Ohio Athletic Conference play in 2021.

Game 1

The Purple Raiders pushed across a run in the first to get things started. An error and a single plated a run for the visitors for a 1-0 lead. Mount Union tallied two more runs in the second. Back-to-back singles began the inning, with a sacrifice bunt setting two runners in scoring position. After a walk, Mount Union hit a 2-run single to set the score at 3-0.

In the third, Mount Union's lead increased. Three straight hits to start the inning got two runs across, leading to a pitching change. An error and a walk set the bases loaded with one out. The Purple Raiders knocked in all three runners, thanks to a double and a single, putting the margin at eight runs.

Following a quiet fourth, Mount Union plated three more runs in the fifth. A single, walk, and another single juiced the bases for the visitors. Mount Union managed to score all three, thanks to an RBI groundout followed by a 2-run single.

The Blue Streaks mounted a rally in the hopes of avoiding a run-rule result in the fifth. Gracie Bressoud tabbed a 1-out single and advanced to third on a passed ball. Kasyn Scarantine plated her with an RBI groundout. Emma Gurley then walked and scored on a Kristen Jesberger double to right center. A strikeout ended the contest in favor of Mount Union, 11-2.

Bressoud, Scarantine, Jesberger, and Serena Paterno all got hits for JCU. Katie DeBord took the loss for JCU.

Game 2

Mount Union burst out to a strong start in the second game.  A walk and two singles loaded the bases for the Alliance warriors. An RBI groundout and a 2-run single to right center allowed the Purple Raiders to race to a 3-0 lead.

Emma Gurley singled in the first and Gabby Hougan doubled in the second, but nothing came of either hit.

The Purple Raiders tallied three more runs in the third. Back-to-back doubles began the frame, with an RBI single and then RBI double pushed the advantage to 6-0.

Scarantine doubled in the third and Jesberger singled in the fourth, but Mount Union's power pitching held JCU off the board until the fifth. Gia Caldrone opened the fifth with a single. After fielder's choices by Nativio and Bressoud, Scarantine singled to juice the bases. Following a strikeout, JCU scored its first run of the ballgame thanks to a Jesberger walk. A popout then ended the frame.

Mount Union notched two insurance runs in the sixth, thanks to a pair of solo home runs. The Purple Raiders put the finishing touches on it in the seventh with an RBI double and an RBI groundout.

The Blue Streaks went down in order in the bottom of the inning, dropping a 10-1 loss.

Scarantine led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish, while Jesberger hit 1-for-2 with 2 walks and the lone RBI. Danielle Orendi took the loss for JCU.

The Blue Streaks will get back on the diamond next Saturday, hosting Wilmington for a twinbill.
