Softball Gets Off the Schneid with Home Sweep of Fightin' Quakers

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- One thing the John Carroll University Softball team took away from their doubleheader against Wilmington was that patience pays off.

The Blue Streaks snapped their 15-game losing streak, beating the Fightin' Quakers, 4-3 and 4-1, in the afternoon's doubleheaders. Pitching helped to win the day for JCU.

"Both of our pitchers could have folded when they ran into trouble early on in the game," said Head Coach Nicole Loudin. "The way they battled and the fact that we answered with our bats, I'm so excited with the way they approached today mentally."

Game 1

Wilmington got off to a fast-paced start in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Lindsey Carter hit a three-run homer for the Quakers, pushing them out to a quick 3-0 lead.

This prompted John Carroll to have a meeting at the mound in the first inning. After the first frame, DeBord locked herself in, not giving up another run throughout the next six innings and pitching lights out.

Soon after, the Blue Streaks would respond with the leadoff hitter Gracie Bressoud reaching first base on a hit in the bottom of the first.

Kasyn Scarantine walked for JCU, and Emma Gurley continued the offensive momentum with a single. With two outs, freshman Jess Lichota recorded a single and two RBIs, bringing in Scarantine and Bressoud. Wilmington led 3-2 at the end of the first.

Pitcher Katie DeBord held Wilmington to zero runs in the top of the second. John Carroll's bats continued to be on fire when Gurley singled and Nativio and Bressoud scored. John Carroll took the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second and this would be all they needed to hold on to the victory.

Things remained the same for both teams as neither team could put any runs in the third inning. Wilmington left two on base in the top of the third whereas JCU left one on base in the bottom of the third.

DeBord forced a quick top of the fourth with one strikeout and groundout. John Carroll faced some trouble after a single and a double for Wilmington off of a JCU error. DeBord was able to escape after a play made by the shortstop to the first baseman to escape a close inning.

The Quakers looked to catch up to the Blue Streaks in the top of the fifth, but DeBord and JCU's defense held on. Wilmington left two runners on base. John Carroll came up to bat but was unable to secure any extra security runs as they went out in a 1-2-3 order.

The sixth inning would remain to be a quiet one, as both teams only recorded one hit.

At the top of the seventh, DeBord came out to complete a mission, which she was able to do in a 1-2-3 fashion. DeBord struck out two out of the three and the other batter grounded out. John Carroll held on to the win.

Bressoud led the Blue Streaks with three hits in her four at-bats. Gurley and Lichota both came away with two RBIs. DeBord pitched all seven innings and captured five strikeouts in the victory.

Game 2

John Carroll continued to build upon the momentum from their first win of the doubleheader. The Blue Streaks captured a sweep over the Quakers of Wilmington in the second game of Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 victory.

In the first inning, Megan Crager of the Quakers was hit by a pitch from pitcher Danielle Orendi. Arianna Layne singled to left field as the second batter. This resulted in Crager advancing to second. After Orendi gave up another walk. Soon after, Lizz Hadley hit a sacrifice fly, resulting in Crager scoring and the Quakers taking a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Gurley hit a home run to left field, tying the game up at 1-1 with two outs.

Wilmington left the top of the second inning with just one hit and leaving one player on base. John Carroll scored their second run of the game with Lauren Sienkiewicz advancing to third and Maddie Traub scored on a wild pitch. This gave John Carroll their first lead of the game and they never looked back.

In the top of the third, Wilmington went out in a 1-2-3 fashion with Orendi capturing two strikeouts and one player flying out.

The determining inning for the Blue Streaks was the bottom of the third. Bressoud kicked off the frame with a single to third base. Scarantine singled to shortstop, pushing Bressoud into scoring position by advancing to second on the throw. Gurley then grounded out, putting up a sacrifice RBI as Bressoud scored. The fun continued with a Traub single, resulting in Scarantine scoring. John Carroll led 4-1, and this was the final run scored in the game.

Orendi continued to pitch lights out, as the Quakers would go hitless in the top of the fourth and fifth. Wilmington would record two more hits. They tried to make a comeback but ultimately they left one on base and John Carroll came away with the win.

"What we've talked about is that when you pitch in high school or summer ball, you know there are points in the lineup where you don't need to have your best stuff and you'll get outs. Here, everybody is a tough out," said Loudin. "We've been talking about upping the intensity and focus for every single pitch, and then knowing that things will happen and we will give up runs. That's not what we want, but it's not the end of the world. They trusted their teammates, knowing that it's okay if we give up a few runs, because their teammates can hit."

Bressoud led the Blue Streaks in the second game, hitting 3-for-4. Gurley tabbed a pair of RBIs while Traub grabbed one. Orendi pitched the whole game and improved her record to 2-6. She recorded six strikeouts in the afternoon.

"If you look at our roster and our experience, we're playing freshmen, a couple sophomores, and seniors in high school against players who are seniors in college and fifth-years, so this is a big confidence boost to know that we can weather some of these storms and work through it, which are growing pains you need to go through," said Loudin said.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Wilmington College on Sunday for another doubleheader and look to continue their win streak. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
