Softball Downed by Polar Bears on Chilly Monday Afternoon

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On a chilly Monday afternoon, John Carroll University Softball finished their season series versus Ohio Northern University after their games on Sunday were postponed due to inclement weather.

The Polar Bears emerged with a victory over the Blue Streaks, 9-2, to sweep the series, 3-0.

With the loss, the Blue Streaks drop to 4-9 on the year, 4-7 in OAC play. ONU advances to 8-5, 7-4 in OAC play.

Ohio Northern scored one in the first inning and then blew open their lead in the third with a 5-run frame. The Polar Bears held a 6-0 lead after the second.

The Blue Streaks responded in the bottom of the third, thanks to a 2-run RBI double by Emma Gurley. The runs trimmed the Ohio Northern lead to 6-2 lead. Unfortunately, that would be the only offense from JCU.

ONU extended their lead in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring three runs in total. The Polar Bears' runs set the final score at 9-2.

Ohio Northern outhit John Carroll on the day, 13-6. JCU did notch three extra-base hits. Kasyn Scarantine tabbed a hit by pitch and Crista Nativio stole a base for JCU. Katie DeBord pitched 4 innings for JCU, allowing just one unearned run on 4 hits.

John Carroll will look to end their 3-game losing streak on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3 against Marietta College with the weekend series starting in University Heights on Friday and then moving to Marietta on Saturday.
