Softball Scores 17 in Game 1, but Falls Cold in Game 2 to Split with Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Softball can be a funny game, sometimes you can pour the offense on in one game and go cold the next. That was the case for John Carroll University Softball on Saturday.

In a twinbill in Columbus, the Blue Streaks routed the Crusaders, 17-2, in the first game before falling to Capital, 3-0, in game two.

The Blue Streaks advance to 2-6 on the year with the split heading into Sunday's doubleheader at Bracken Field.

Game 1

From the moment the Blue Streaks stepped off the bus onto Clowson Field, they were feeling dangerous.

Gracie Bressoud opened up the game with a single to center on the second pitch of the game. Bressoud stole second and Emma Gurley advanced her to third with a double. Kristen Jesberger reached on an error, which scored Bressoud and sent Gurley to third. Jess Lichota then singled, plating Gurley and Jesberger.

Mallory Stonebraker singled to center to keep the fun times going. Gabby Hougan then tallied a single to score Lichota and set the score at 4-0. After a Crista Nativio single, Bressoud blasted a grand slam to double the lead to 8-0 in dramatic fashion.

Kasyn Scarantine walked, Gurley singled, and Jesberger walked to load the bases, but Capital escaped out of the jam trailing 8-0. But the Blue Streaks were not done.

Stonebraker, Sienkiewicz, and Hougan walked to open the second inning, loading the bases for Nativio. The junior took full advantage of the opportunity, with an RBI single. Following a foul out, Scarantine tabbed an RBI sacrifice fly to plate Sienkiewicz. A Gurley double furthered the lead and a 2-run Jesberger single placed an exclamation mark on a 5-run frame.

Stonebraker began the third by reaching on a fielding error and Ellie Robertson singled to right. Aislyn McQueen then hammered a single up the middle to score Stonebraker for her first career RBI and the 14-0 lead.

Capital notched a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but the lead was more than safe. Just to be sure, the Blue Streaks scored three more in the top of the fifth. Sydney Hall started the fun with 1 out and Bressoud advanced her to third with a double. Two batters later, Maddie Traub scored both Hall and Bressoud with a nice single. Serena Patterson completed the scoring with a 2-out triple to center field.

Bressoud (3-for-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and Gurley (3-for-3, 1 RBI) were nearly flawless at the plate for John Carroll. The Blue Streaks finished with 16 hits, four for extra bases.

Katie DeBord recorded the win for JCU with two scoreless innings. Madison Eagle and Danielle Orendi also pitched well in the blowout.

Game 2

The offense did not carry over into the second contest of Saturday's twinbill for John Carroll, unfortunately.

Following a scoreless top of the first, Capital got on the board thanks to a pair of singles. Two more singles and an error in the single advanced the Crusaders' advantage to 2-0. DeBord pitched a solid 3 innings with 3 strikeouts and 2 runs allowed, but was on the hook for the loss.

The Crusaders tallied another run in the fifth in Eagle's second inning of work. Capital's run advanced the score to 3-0.

The Blue Streaks threatened to rally in the top half of the seventh. Jesberger plastered a 1-out double to center to start things. Stonebraker walked to set runners on first and second and bringing the tying run to the plate. But the Blue Streaks couldn't get the needed hit and fell, 2-0.

Scarantine, Jesberger, and Sienkiewicz all tabbed hits in the loss.

The Blue Streaks are now 2-4 in OAC play entering Sunday.
