Two shots by Stonebraker help softball sweep Capital

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- It was two completely different games, but both resulted in the same outcome: Blue and Gold winners

In a doubleheader doozie, John Carroll University Softball Team defeated the Capital Crusaders 2-1 in game one and 10-2 in game two at Bracken Field on Sunday, March 21. The Blue Streaks improve to 4-6 on the season and have won four of their last five games.

"There's definitely going to be a lot of parity this year in the Ohio Athletic Conference," Head Coach Nicole Loudin said after the game. "To go 4-0 in a weekend is really hard to go. Going 3-1 is almost what you have to shoot for.

"I am really happy. We have put 2020 behind us. We are a really young team. They are growing before our eyes and it's awesome to see. They're more excited at what their teammates accomplish than what they are of their own accomplishments."

Next weekend, the Blue and Gold will have back-to-back doubleheaders against Ohio Northern. JCU will host ONU at home on March 28.

Game One

Pitching dominated and aggressive base running prevailed as only three total runs were scored through seven innings.

After two scoreless innings, Capital broke the silence in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Although the Blue and Gold fell down a run, it didn't take long for Loudin's squad to answer.

To lead off the next half-inning, Gracie Bressoud singled up the middle. Then, Loudin dialed up two sacrifice bunts. Bressoud's excellent base running brought her to third and the second sacrifice bunt by Emma Gurley resulted in an RBI. JCU tied the game at one.

Over the next 2.5 innings, the two teams only combined to total four hits.

Loudin dug deep in her playbook in the bottom of the six to pinch-hit Gia Caldrone and Mackenzie Stease. Both players came up big, as Caldrone singled to left center and Stease smacked an RBI double that gave the Blue Streaks the 2-1 lead and the game.

"What Stease did was amazing. The game was in her hands," Loudin said. "She came up big at the best time."

Madison Eagle and Danielle Orendi emerged in relief of Katie DeBord. The pair combined to only allow two hits in four innings. They each tallied a strikeout as well.

"The entire pitching staff did outstanding work today," Loudin said. "They each came up big in their own respective moments."

At the plate, Gabby Hougan went 2-for-3 with two singles.

Game Two

With both teams playing each other three times, a combined three home runs contributed to the scoreboard. Two of the three were smoked over the left-field wall by Mallory Stonebraker.

"She has come in with a great mindset," Loudin said. "Her patience at the plate was outstanding.

In the bottom of the second inning, Stonebraker drilled her first homer to give JCU a 2-0 lead. An inning and a half later, Capital's Lexie Leggett answered Stonebraker's two-run shot with a home run of her own. Luckily, an RBI single in the third by Gurley kept John Carroll ahead 3-2.

Stonebraker had no patience for only a 1-run lead.

To lead off the inning, Stonebraker hit her second home run of the day, which opened up a seven-run inning by the Blue Streaks. Bressoud and Kasyn Scarantine had RBI singles and Gurley and Kristen Jesberger each had RBI walks. Jesberger later scored on a wild pitch that capped off the inning. John Carroll led 10-2.

The Crusaders made one last stand in the top of the fifth, but Madison Eagle held JCU scoreless with the help of a dominant defensive effort.

DeBord was lights out with no hits allowed in three innings pitched; she also struck out one batter and allowed no walks.

Bressoud had two hits in the game and Gurley finished with two RBI. Jesberger was 1-1 and drew two walks.
