Blue Streaks Down Purple Raiders In Physical Matchup Between Heated Rivals

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH -- On a sunny Saturday afternoon in University Heights, the rivalry week continued in OAC athletics with the John Carroll Blue Streaks facing off against the Mount Union Purple Raiders in men's lacrosse.

John Carroll defeated the Mount Union Raiders 17-5 courtesy of Skyler Blake leading the attack with nine goals, one short of tying his career high record of 10 goals in a game.

"It is just his competitive nature and drive coming out. He wants to do everything for this team to win," said head coach Joe Rautenstrauch. "He came back to this team for a reason. Game in and game out it is showing why."

John Carroll improves their record to 4-1 with the victory against the Purple Raiders.

"It is another nice win in our conference. Mount Union plays very well and they are a well coached team. They always give us a good game," said Rautenstrauch. "It is key to get out to a big lead at halftime and secure the win in the second half"

The other key contributors for the Blue Streaks were Bennett Gorman with six assists and Ian Flynn recording a hat trick by notching three goals, tying his career high in a game.

In the first quarter of play, John Carroll outscored the Purple Raiders 4-2. Blake led the team with two goals. Matt Berdysiak and Brendan Whitty contributed the other two goals in the first quarter.

In the second quarter of play, the John Carroll attack proved to be effective once again by outscoring  Mount Union 6-2.

Despite John Carroll having a 10-2 lead over Mount Union, with 1:33 left in the first half Mount Union knocked down two goals to show the offensive power they had left in them. Their goals were courtesy of Alex Elison and Logan Gebhart.

For the first half of the game, John Gaglio played in goal recording four saves for the Blue Streaks. Mount Unions keeper Kyle Reihner.

John Carroll's offensive dominance led them in out shooting the purple raiders 29-13 in the first half of the game.

The tale of the second half of the game was defense. John Carroll outscored Mount Union 7-1 in the second half.

In the fourth quarter Flynn and Blake each tabbed two goals respectively.

"Ian Flynn has to be the most athletic player in the conference," said Rautenstrauch. "If he gets rolling it opens up a lot of opportunities on offense."

John Carroll switched up their goal keeper in the second half putting in Adam Grant. Grant made eight saves on the night.

The Blue and Gold out-shot the Raiders 48-30. John Carroll grabbed 30 ground balls as opposed to the Raider's 25.

John Carroll will go on to play at Ohio Northern University in Ada, OH on Saturday March 27, at 1:00 PM.
