Blake Reaches Two Career Milestones as JCU Beats Marietta with 26-Goal output

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Skyler Blake showed the John Carroll University Men's Lacrosse team that the sky's the limit for the 2021 season.

Led by Blake's career-high 10 goals, the Blue Streaks needed no luck to beat Marietta College, 26-2, at Don Shula Stadium on St. Patrick's Day — March 17, 2021.

Blake accomplished two program milestones in the Blue and Gold's win. With Blake's 10 scores, he set a single-game high for goals in a game. In addition, Blake surpassed Declan O'Grady '17 with 188 goals in his career. O'Grady previously netted 184 scores.

Following the win, JCU improved to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 all-time against Marietta. The Blue and Gold return to action on March 20 at Don Shula Stadium at 1 p.m.

"It was a great team win with everyone chipping in," said Head Coach Joe Rautenstrauch. "Without fall ball, we had a lot of things to work on this spring, and it finally feels like we are putting together what we envisioned as a staff."

With the help of Blake, the Blue and Gold started out hot with a pair of goals less than five minutes into the opening quarter. Then, with 5:27 remaining, Blake scored his third, helping JCU to go ahead 3-0.

Blake has now recorded 30 hat tricks in his John Carroll career.

Marietta finally cracked the scoreboard 10:31 into the opening quarter, except the goal was quickly answered by Matt Berdsyiak. The Blue Streaks led 4-1 after the first stanza.

In the second quarter, the Blue Streaks took control and opened up the scoring with eight goals.

Once again, Blake led the early charge with two goals as the quarter approached its midway point. JCU also received help from Reed Stuhlreyer, who also had two scores in the second quarter.

Matt Berdysiak put an exclamation mark on the first half with a goal as time expired. Berdysiak had three goals in the first 30 minutes and eclipsed a new career-high in the category with five goals for the game. At the half, John Carroll led 12-1.

In the second half, the Blue Streaks continued to fire on all cylinders with seven scores through three quarters to go ahead 19-1. Blake led the way with four goals in the third quarter and Bennett Gorman, Morgan Morrell, Josh Plarr and Brendan Whitty each found the back of the net.

Blake set the record in the second half after firing yet another goal into the net.

"Hats of to Skyler Blake for setting the goals record in a career," said Rautenstrauch. "It's all well-earned, and a lot of credit to the guys who get him the ball to open him up. It's truly a team effort with Skyler being a driving force in everyone's success."

To close out the game, Chandler Bankey, Berdsyiak, Blake, Nicholas Opett and Cullen Zarek scored goals. Stuhlreyer also added two for JCU.

Bennett Gorman dished out four assists in the game.

Defensively, Clayton Karam collected a game-high eight ground balls and four cleared turnovers. Brendan Hein and Ian Venard also added six ground balls. The Blue Streaks set a school record with a staggering 72 shots. John Carroll collected 59 ground balls, only a couple off of the school mark.
