Divers Thrive, Swimmers Dominate in Win over BW for Women's Swimming & Diving

BEREA, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Women's Swimming & Diving team headed to Berea, Ohio on Saturday for meet number two of the 2021 season. The Blue Streaks were fresh off a win against rival Mount Union last week, while Baldwin Wallace was coming off of a two-meet losing streak losing to Mount Union and Ohio Northern. 

The Blue Streaks defeated the Yellow Jackets, 173-66, in a festive day for the Blue and Gold.

Beyond the win, the Blue Streaks set a new Baldwin Wallace Natatorium record for the 400 Medley Relay. 

The divers started off the meet day in Berea with 1 Meter Diving. Catherine Steinwachs won the event with scores of 145.05 and 178.05. Kathryn Visco (139.10 and 113.70) and Sarah Hanlon (163.60 and 108.10) took second and third. Maria VanDevere also competed in Berea. 

Barton was extremely pleased with the team's divers.

"It was great to see all four of our female divers back on the boards," Barton said. "This is a hardworking group committed to getting better each day."

The swimming portion of the day started with similar success. In the 400 Medley Relay, the JCU A team of Spenser Kale, Gwyn Ledrick, Tori Vale, and Anna Glass won the first race of the day with a time of 4:10.65. 

In the 1000 Free, Bella Ratino of Baldwin Wallace took home the win, with JCU's Lauren Spence coming in 2nd, Paige Wnek in 3rd, and Isabella Genise in 4th. 

Blue Streaks wins followed in the next two races. Anna Glass won the 200 Free with a time of 2:01.21 and Gwyneth Hamilton took home a win for the Blue Streaks in the 50 Free with a time of 25.69. 

In the 400 IM, Kayla McClintock for the Yellow Jackets notched first, but a strong race from freshman Danielle Turi got her second place with a time of 5:09.31, and Katelin Avenir came in third with a time of 5:11.23. 

Tori Vale took home a win in the Women's 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:01.65, while Rachel Halapchuk snagged second with a time of 1:04.45.

Gwyn Ledrick won the 100 Free with a time of 54.88. Coming in second was Hamilton with a time of 56.70, and coming in third with a time of 57.59 was Hope Scherger

Maddie Panus captured the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:03.75, and Spenser Kale came in a very close second with a time of 1:03.99. Rachel Halapchuck earned third with a time of 1:07.88. 

In the 500 Free, Bella Ratino won it for BW with a time of 5:21.80. Ynrya Bohan came in second for the Blue Streaks with a time of 5:35.73, and taking third was Paige Wnek with a time of 5:41.38.

The Blue Streaks ended their day just how they started – with a victory. The A relay team in the 200 Free Relay (comprised of Gwyn Ledrick, Ynyra Bohan, Gwyneth Hamilton, and Anna Glass) took care of business. 

"Our women raced exceptionally well," said Barton. "It was great to see our ladies having fun while swimming fast. This was a convincing performance in an OAC dual meet."

The Blue Streaks host two meets this upcoming weekend. Wilmington College will visit JCU on Friday, Feb. 19 and Ohio Northern will come to University Heights on Saturday, Feb. 20 for back-to-back in the William H. Johnson Natatorium.
