Women's Soccer Succumbs to Comets in Home OAC Matchup

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After a quick start, it seemed as though the John Carroll University Women's Soccer team would end Capital's 3-game winning streak.

However, two brilliant first-half goals from the Comets kept it intact, as they streaked past the Blue and Gold, 2-1, in University Heights.

The fast start was aided by Brittany Dufalla, who was fouled by Capital's Olivia Rotolo just 2:31 into the match setting up a penalty kick. The senior delivered, as she buried her team-high seventh goal of the season to put John Carroll up 1-0.

The Comets started to get hot in the 24th minute when Cassidy Ryan fired a shot from 15 yards out, putting it in the top right corner to tie the match, 1-1.

Fourteen minutes later, Francesca Longano kicked the ball from 25 yards out and beautifully placed it in the upper right corner of the goal to break the tie, 2-1, where the score would remain into the locker room.

Capital outshot JCU 7-2 in the first half, including on goal, 3-2.

A number of missed opportunities hindered any chance of a Blue Streak comeback in the second half.

In the 50th minute, Gabriella Walter missed a heartbreaking header that went just wide of the goal for JCU.

With just six minutes remaining, a JCU cornerkick failed as Comets goalkeeper Lauren White leaped up and grabbed the ball which stifled an attack.

Dufalla had a great chance with about two minutes left, but her shot hit the side of the net out of bounds.

It was more of an even battle in the second half, with Capital outgaining the Blue Streaks on shots 6-5. However, none of those opportunities were on goal for JCU.

White kept her fourth straight clean slate for the Comets, while Danielle DelGiudice made three saves for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll will face off against Otterbein at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday, October 13 at 7pm while Capital heads to Marietta on the same day.
