John Carroll and Heidelberg both came into tonight's contest looking to break the fifth place tie in the Ohio Athletic Conference with each team carrying a 6-6 record, respectively.
After 40 minutes of regulation proved how close the two teams were in the standings, the Blue Streaks ultimately fell two points short in an 85-83 loss to the Student Princes.
The fact that the game went the extra five minutes was all due to a dramatic finish in regulation.
JCU led 71-68 entering the final minute of play, but w
ith 41.2 seconds left, Heidelberg's Dylan Woods hit a three point shot to tie the game up at 71.
A JCU turnover and Heidelberg steal gave the Student Princes a chance to take a late led, and once again Woods delivered. He pulled up from the top of the key and drained another three
with three seconds remaining for a 74-71 advantage.
After a series of John Carroll inbounds plays to advance the ball, Emmett Chambers scooped a pass quickly to Ryan Berger, who found the back of the net for a breathtaking three point shot as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.
The Blue Streaks were poised to use that momentum to start overtime, but it was
Heidelberg that scored seven consecutive points to open the bonus session, taking the lead over the Blue Streaks, 81-74.
Chambers broke the streak by dunking a two point shot cutting the match to a five point game. Jackson Sartain did what he is best at, scoring three point shots making the score 81-79.
Tamal Watkins tallied his third three pointer of the night for an 84-79 lead with 50 ticks left, but JCU did all it could to force a second overtime. Down 85-81, Ryan Berger was fouled on a three-point attempt with just under four seconds left. He made the first two free throws and missed the third on purpose. The ball was deflected off a Heidelberg player giving the Blue Streaks an opportunity to tie or win with 1.8 seconds remaining.
The inbounds pass went to
Jimmy Berger in the lane, but his contested lay-up rolled around then off the side iron and the game was over.
Sartain, who had a monumental game scoring his 1000th point on Saturday against nationally ranked Marietta, was a main reason for the Blue Streaks' success early on against the Student Princes. Sartain started out hot scoring eight points within the first eight minutes putting the Blue Streaks at an 18-12 advantage at the 12:43 mark in the first half. He did not miss on any of his five shot attempt in the opening half.
John Carroll's lead did not remain for long.
Heidelberg put up a challenge against the Blue Streaks defense by scoring nine consecutive points, lifting the Student Princes over JCU 27-25 with 3:48 on the clock in the first half.
The Blue & Gold took a timeout to gather themselves back together. Ryan Berger's two point jumper finally silenced Heidelberg's 11 point scoring streak.
John Carroll found their sweet spot was behind the paint towards the end of the first half.
Connor Fitzgerald scored a pair of three pointersa, helping push the home team's lead over Heidelberg to 35-31.
Going into the locker room at halftime, John Carroll held a single point advantage over Heidelberg by a score of 35-34.
In the first half, Sean Flannery led the team in three categories after the first half leading with five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sartain led the scoring efforts tallying 11 points in the first half.
At one point in the second half, John Carroll appeared to seize control, going on a 12 point scoring streak to to make the score 53-43 with 13 minutes remaining, resulting in their largest lead of the game.
JCU still led 58-48 with just under 11 minutes left when the Blue Streaks cooled off just as the Student Princes began to warm up. The visitors
started slowly climbing back into the game, cutting the Blue Streaks lead to a one possession lead (62-59) with 6:18 remaining.
Emmett Chambers knocked down two back to back jumpers for his first four points of the night at a crucial time for the Blue Streaks to maintain the lead lifting them atop Heidelberg 66-61. JCU did not lose its lead until the final minute.
Leaders for the Blue Streaks were Chambers in rebounds (10), Flannery in assists (9), and Ryan Berger in points (22).
With the loss, John Carroll falls to 13-7 and 6-7 in the OAC, while Heidelberg improves to 9-11 and 7-6 in league play. Woods led all players with 25 points on 10-15 shooting from the field, including 5-9 from long range.
John Carroll will travel to Columbus on Saturday to take on the Capital Crusaders in an OAC match at 1:00 p.m.
