John Carroll played 95 minutes of basketball this week.
Thankfully, after all that basketball, there was a happy ending.
Three days following an overtime loss at home against Heidelberg, the Blue Streaks went to two overtimes on the road this afternoon to defeat Capital, 100-89.
The final three minutes of regulation served as a precursor to what was a thriller, as neither team led by more than one possession.
Sean Flannery showed his ability to be clutch by nailing two free throws with 50 seconds remaining to put JCU up by two. Capital's Griffin Doesck traded two additional shots from the charity stripe with 24 seconds remaining, dead-bolting the game at 81 and sending it into overtime.Â
Both teams were well spent in the first overtime, as only 10 total points were scored — making a second extra time period necessary to decide a victor. JCU had a chance om its final possession to win the game, but a turnover halted any shot attempt.
The Blue Streaks caught a second wind in the second overtime, igniting a 5-0 run right out of the gate as Flannery,
Ryan Berger and
Jackson Sartain all contributed to the run. That proved to be enough fuel in the ignition for the Blue and Gold to close out their longest game played of the season.
John Carroll evens its record back up to 7-7 in the OAC and improves to 14-7 on the year.Â
To open up the game, the Blue Streaks sparked an 11-point lead at the 13-minute mark led by three 3-pointers from Sartain. As time wound down in the first half, the Crusaders cruised to tie the game up at 36 with 4:12 left.
Jimmy Berger, who reached 1,000 points with his 18th point today, found rhythm as the opening half came to a close, scoring five points from the free throw line. JCU led 47-45 at the break.
Both teams came out of the locker room sluggish in the second half, only scoring an eight combined points in the first five minutes. By the time the pace of play picked up, it was a boxing match. Both teams traded shots but JCU eventually pulled away to lead by 6 at the 11:44 left in the game.
Capital strung together their best three minutes of basketball, hitting their stride with a 9-0 run that left the Blue and Gold down by seven. After a scoreless first 15 minutes of the second half,
Jimmy Berger shifted it into gear and scored 7 points. John Carroll tied the game at 76 with 3:24 remaining.Â
From there, the teams extended play 13 more minutes, with the Blue Streaks coming out on top.
Sartain led JCU with 24 points, followed by
Ryan Berger with 22 and
Jimmy Berger with 20.
Ryan Berger had five steals and
Jimmy Berger led the Blue Streaks with nine boards.
Ganiyu Yahaya had 24 points to match Sartain for Capital, and added 12 rebounds, while Reed Bradfield has 20 points an a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Blue Streaks host Baldwin Wallace this Wednesday at the DeCarlo Varsity Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.Â
