For just the fourth time in program history, the John Carroll University men's soccer team has started off a season 7-0 thanks to a road win over Cleveland rival Case Western Reserve University Wednesday night.
A first half goal by
Justin LaFountain and a second half goals by
Justin Brown held up against a late surge by the host Spartans, and the Blue Streaks prevailed, 2-1.
For just the second time all year, the Blue and Gold did not tally more shots than its opponent as CWRU had 13 shots compared to five for JCU.
But the Blue Streaks maximized their opportunities. LaFountain scored his second goal of the season when Brown found him on a cross. LaFountain headed the ball in for a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
JCU struck early in the second when Brown scored his first goal of the year, and the first of his career, when
Lawrence Cersosimo was able to feed him a pass in the six-yard box.
The 2-0 lead stood until the 80th minute, when the Spartans prevented the shutout on a goal by Seldon Magruder. It was part of relentless pressure that the home team brought as five of its 13 shots taken occurred in the final 20 minutes.
Connor Robinson made five saves to help the Blue Streaks secure their seventh win of the season. The 2019 squad joins the 1991, 2000 and 2017 teams as the only squads to begin a year with seven consecutive wins. The first three to do so were a combined 44-7-4 when making those strong starts.
JCU is now 7-0 on the year while CWRUÂ drops to 3-2-2.
