There would be no repeat of 2018.
On Friday afternoon at the South Regency Tennis Club in Miamisburg, Ohio, John Carroll and Mount staged a rematch of their 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference championship match in the semifinal round of this year's tournament.
In the 2018 version, Mount Union swept the doubles, forcing John Carroll to rally in singles play to capture its fourth consecutive OAC crown.
The 2019 version would hold far less drama. The Blue Streaks swept the doubles en route to a 5-1 victory, setting up a finals date with Ohio Northern on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
JCU had control of all three matches. Â
Andy Siciliano and
David Sinense dispatched the top Mount Union duo of Robert Cross and Zach Teffner, 8-4. In the #2 match, which was the closest of the three,Â
Andrew Triner and
Gustavo Garcia outlasted Antonio Massucci and Justin Kelley, 8-6. In the # match,Â
Adi Jha and
Parker Holyn defeated Jacob Barton and Scott Fletcher, 8-3.
Armed with a 3-0 lead, John Carroll would need just two wins to cement the victory. But at least for few moments, Mount Union would make the Blue Streaks work for it. Teffner defeated Sinense in three sets to net the Purple Raiders first point in the #2 singles match, and Siciliano and Cross were going to a third set at #1 singles after Cross evened the match with a second set win.
Garcia put the fourth John Carroll point up on the board with a straight set win at #3 singles, but with the #1 match still in the balance, two more matches were commenced.
Siciliano, however, would not be denied. Bouncing back from his setback in the second, the sophomore closed out the third set, 6-3, to clinch the semifinal win.
JCU is now 8-9 on the year, while Mount Union finishes its season at 11-7.
