For the first time in program history, the John Carroll University women's lacrosse team recorded a shutout win and they did so in dominating fashion. The Blue Streaks defeated the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum, 22-0, to improve to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.
The Blue and Gold came out firing on all cylinders, scoring four goals within the first two minutes of the game. Two of the goals were scored by junior
Colleen Grombala, who finished with a game-high four goals.
A few minutes of play went by before the Blue Streaks started scoring again. Freshman
Alex Heishman picked right off where Grombala left off, scoring one of her game-high four goals four minutes into the match.
JCU's defense was well on display as the Blue and Gold only allowed two shots on goal, the first one coming 13:55 into the contest by Muskingum's Sam Stafford. By then, the Blue Streaks would already pose a convincing 10-0 lead not even half way through the first half.
John Carroll trotted into the half with a 14-0 lead, but was not content to rest on its laurels. Twelve seconds into the second half, Heishman scored another, her 15th goal of the season.
From that point on, JCU added seven insurance goals. Sound defense by the Blue Streaks would result in no shots allowed in the second half. The Blue and Gold finished recording 23 ground balls and a successful 8-8 on clear attempts. Heishman had a team-high four ground balls and shared the lead with Workman in caused turnovers with three.
Sophomore
Kaleigh Kotula and
Elyssa Zablo combined for the shutout victory in goal, each notching one save each.
Freshman
Emma Workman and sophomore Sophia Brandimarte each recorded three goals in the win.
JCU had a 49-3 shots advantage, and won 19 of the 24 draws.
Next on the slate for the Blue and Gold will be a non-conference match with the Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday, March 27 at 6:00 p.m.
