Coming off of a hard loss against Roanoke College during their spring break trip in San Juan, the Blue Streaks were looking to rediscover their offense and regain confidence in their first match back against Oberlin College.
They did just that, scoring a season-high goal total as John Carroll defeated Oberlin, 18-10, at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, Ohio.
John Carroll came out fighting, gaining a 4-1 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest. Contributing to these goals were seniors
Brooke McQuinn and
Alexis Guage and freshman
Emma Workman.
Oberlin was able to pull even at 4-4 with 16:39 to play in the opening half, but the Blue Streaks would score five of the final six goals of the half to take a 9-5 lead into the locker room.
McQuinn tallied three goals in that first half of play while Guage and Workman netted two goals each to combine for seven of the nine Blue Streaks first half goals. Junior goalkeeper
Elyssa Zablo contributed to that lead by holding Oberlin to five goals. In addition, the Blue Streaks defense caused ten turnovers in the first half.
John Carroll kept its momentum going strong in the second half, beginning with junior
Colleen Grombala netting her first two goals of the match in the opening four minutes.
Sophomore
Maddie Speer and freshman
Greta Youngblut both tallied their first goals of the season to help contribute to the Blue Streaks victory.
McQuinn ended the match with five total goals, and Workman showed up right behind her with four. A pass from Guage secured Grombala's hat trick for this evening.
In all, eight different players either had at least one goal or one assist as John Carroll's balanced attack helped produce 49 shots for the contest.
On defense, sophomore
Kaleigh Kotula came in as goalkeeper for the second half and made six saves.
The Blue Streaks caused another eight turnovers to end the match. They also grabbed hold of 36 ground balls compared to Oberlin's 20.
With the win, John Carroll improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 at home this season. Oberlin's loss dipped its record to 1-2.
Up next, the Blue Streaks will host The College of Wooster this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium.
