Box Score In the first contest between the two teams on January 16th, John Carroll pushed Baldwin Wallace to the limit before eventually falling in overtime.
This evening in Berea, extra time proved costly again, but for a different reason.
A faulty rim prior to the game presented more than a 40-minute delay. Once the game commenced, John Carroll could not find the start button. The host Yellow Jackets scored the first nine points of the contest and never trailed en route to a 93-83 win at Ursprung Gymnasium.
It was a tale of two halves, as Baldwin Wallace would lead by as many as 25 in the first before taking a 50-30 lead into the locker room. Baldwin Wallace would shoot a blistering 20-36 (.556), including 10-20 (.500) from three-point range.
John Carroll was just 10-33 (.303) from the field, including 1-6 (.167) from long range. The Blue Streaks did go 9-9 from the free throw line in the opening half.
The lone bright spot offensively in the first half for John Carroll was reigning OAC Player of the Week
Jimmy Berger, who added 10 points and snatched 3 boards.
The second half saw some life return to the Blue Streaks side while the Yellow Jackets cooled off somewhat.
A
Jackson Sartain three pointer followed by a jumper by
Jimmy Berger got the Blue Streaks offense rolling. A 7-2 run to begin the half would lead to the Blue Streaks eventually cutting the lead nine at 72-63 with 10:11 left in the game.
For the rest of the way, Baldwin Wallace would answer every John Carroll threat. As time ticked off the clock, the Yellow Jackets offense never trickled away despite John Carroll heating up in the second half.
In the second, Baldwin Wallace was 16-30 (.533) from the floor but was not as successful beyond the arc, going 4-11 (.364), or at the free throw line, hitting 7-12 (.538).
Meanwhile, JCU did start to find a better rhythm, going 20-44 (.455) from the field and 9-23 (.391) from deep.
Leading the way for JCU was
Jimmy Berger, who finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Twin brother Ryan also scored 18 points, ten in the second half.
Luke Hippler had 12 of his 14 points in the second half, and Sartain (who moved into fourth in program history for three pointers made when he nailed his first three ball of the night) ended the evening with 13 points.Â
For Baldwin Wallace, Jay Battle finished with 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Tyler Colombo finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
John Carroll now stands at 9-13 overall and 5-10 (7th place) in the OAC on the season. Baldwin Wallace, which swept John Carroll for the first time since 2012-13, improved to 15-7 overall and 9-6 (5th place) in league play.
Up next for the Blue Streaks is a matchup with Ohio Northern (5-17, 1-14 OAC). The game is Saturday, February 9, with tip-off being scheduled for 2 p.m.
