First Half Goal Stands Up As Blue Streaks Knock Off Capital In Battle Of Preseason Favorites

One-shot was all it took to put the Blue Streaks season back in rhythm.

In the 22nd minute from the corner, Wiliam Turrittin put his arm up, cranked back, and put the ball into the goalkeeper's box — Mario Aboumitri finished it from there. The ball that deflected off Aboumitri's head hit the back of the net and John Carroll University defeated Capital 1-0.

"We have been talking about corner kicks and set pieces in these OAC games," Turrittin said on the field after the game. "It is a grind every single game. Those dead balls where we can run plays, those are key chances that we are going to get."

Aboumitri, the scorer of the goal, agreed with his teammate.

"It was a grind the whole game," said. "At the beginning of the game, we were getting chances in the box. We got a corner and I just tracked the ball down and netted it."

Tonight's match featured the two teams that were projected to finish first and second in the Ohio Athletic Conference this season. JCU was picked first (77 total votes, six first place) and Capital was tabbed second (76 total votes, four first place). It had a heavyweight title bout feel to it from the start

The Crusaders fired five of the final eight shots off in the first half. Additionally, they sprung off three of the first four shots of the second half. Blue and Gold goalkeeper Connor Robinson stood tall, saving five shots that were on the goal of 16 total kicks. It was JCU's third consecutive shutout.

Despite only one ball trickling in the net, the Blue Streaks outshot Capital 16-10 but only five came on the net. Justin Brown had a team-high four of those shots in the victory.

"It is so nice to be home," said Turritin. "To play in front of this crowd — the support they give us. It is special to cap the night off with a win."

Next on the slate for the Blue and Gold are the Otterbein Cardinals, who will come to Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday.
