Lightning Strikes Twice As Turritin-Nigro Combo Helps Lift JCU to 2-1 Overtime Victory

Matt Nigro's winning goal on a corner kick from William Turritin with 2.4 seconds left in the first overtime helped to lift John Carroll to a 2-1 victory over Otterbein Wednesday night at Don Shula Stadium.

The cold and pouring rain couldn't stop the John Carroll Blue Streaks from getting their fifth win at Don Shula Stadium this season as they took on the Otterbein Cardinals.

The game got off to a slow start, with John Carroll having possession for the majority of the time, without any promise of a goal in sight.

This all changed when Mario Aboumitri got the first attempt on goal, a beautiful header that was just inches short of going above the goalie's hands and into the back of the net.

Immediately after, the tempo of the game changed. The Blue Streaks continued to pressure the Otterbein defensive line and many shots came close to connecting with the back of the net.

The Cardinals counter-attacked the Blue Streaks with a shot attempt off a direct kick that hit the crossbar and another shot on a wide open net that went over the goal.

As the clock ran down for the first half, the game remained scoreless.

John Carroll's offense had many opportunities for a finish with five corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but still the game remained scoreless.

Then with a little over five minutes left in the game, Matt Nigro slotted the ball into the right corner off an assist from William Turrittin off a free kick, putting the Blue Streaks up 1-0.

That was the way the game would seemingly end, but te Cardinals had one last gasp.

With just 12 seconds remaining in regulation, Otterbein finally got its goal when a mad dash into the opposing end paid off. Kennedy Mensah delivered a game-tying goal from a beautiful thru ball assist from Gabe Sharrock.

That would be enough to send the game into overtime.

Both teams had realistic chances to end the game throughout the extra ten minutes, but John Carroll took advantage of a mad scramble after a ball rolled over the end line with 18 seconds left.

"It went out-of-bounds and we saw that there was 18 seconds left,' said Nigro. "Will booked it, I booked it. He was trying to find me back post and I did my best to get there and I got there. It was a great team win."

John Carroll boosted its overall record to 10-2-2 and its OAC record 3-0-1. JCU is tied with Wilmington for first place in the OAC with identical 3-0-1 marks.

Otterbein's record falls to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.

JCU will face Ohio Northern in Ada Saturday in a rematch of last year's conference championship bout.
