Triumph Over Baldwin Wallace Nets John Carroll 14th Consecutive League Dual Meet Win

Maddie Dolce
It will take some time for the John Carroll program to reach the bar set for the longest winning streak in Ohio Athletic Conference dual meets.

The record is 38, set by the Blue Streak women from February 9, 1990, to October 27, 2000.

But for now, winning 14 in a row is a very worthy accomplishment in its own right.

A 135-102 win over Baldwin Wallace Saturday afternoon in Berea, Ohio, marked the 14th consecutive OAC victory for John Carroll and the 22nd in their last 23 league duals dating back to the 2013-14 season.

Results

The day began well when the JCU "A" team of Katelin Avenir, Gwyn Ledrick, Tori Vale and Olivia Talamo won the 200 Medley Relay in a time of 1:52.82.

Baldwin Wallace immediately tied the meet at 18-18 when the Yellow Jackets went 1-2 in the 1000 Free, but in a tone-setting victory, Maddie Dolce out-dueled former All-OAC performer Allie Thorson in the 200 Free. Dolce had a winning time of 2:02.62, beating Thorson who posted a 2:03.66.

Olivia Talamo (25.84) would follow with a win in the 50 Free, and then Ledrick (2:15.35), Chloe Ruggiero (2:21.88) and Avenir (2:22.99) registered a lethal 1-2-3 punch in the 200 IM that gave the Blue Streaks a 63-31 lead.

John Carroll would maintain a comfortable margin the rest of the way.

Tori Vale won the 100 Fly (1:01.20), while Shelbi Shearer (57.07) and Dolce (57.55) provided the Blue Streaks a 1-2 finish in the 100 Free to build the JCU advantage to 94-54 through the first eight events.

JCU closed out the meet with wins by Ledrick in the 100 Breast and by Shearer, Hope Scherger, Dolce and Felice Ferrante in the 200 Free Relay.

With the win, the Blue Streaks improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the OAC.

The Blue Streaks also managed to set two BW Natatorium records in the 200 Medley Relay and the 100 Breast (Ledrick).

John Carroll returns home this Friday for its first meet at the Johnson Natatorium since October 27 when the Blue & Gold hosts Ashland University.
