After being blanked in their season opener Friday at Kenyon, the John Carroll Blue Streaks wasted little time in kick starting their offense Sunday against Denison.
Just 51 seconds into their home opener at Don Shula Stadium, the Blue Streaks cashed in on a free kick by freshman
Evan Malpass, setting the tone for a 6-1 victory over the Big Red.
The six goals matched the program record for most scored in a home opener. John Carroll tallied six markers in its 2009 Shula Stadium debut against Malone.
Following Malpass into the net in the opening half were
Stephen Schutt on a beautiful through ball by
Jared Ianiro,
Brian Lutz on a penalty kick after successfully stealing a ball just outside the box, and
Mikey Burrington on a breakaway following a successful clear by
Michael Adelman.
Adriano Margiotta (off a Lutz corner) and
Justin LaFountain (who followed a William Turritin shot that smacked the post) added second half goals to up the JCU lead to 6-0. A very late goal by Leo Herard spoiled the shutout bid by
Liam McIntosh, who made four saves.
The victory enabled John Carroll to avoid an 0-2 start, something its has remarkably stayed clear of since 1997. The win also evened the all-time series between the two schools, which dates back to 1982, at 11-11.
The Blue Streaks will next be in action on Friday, September 7, at Penn State Behrend.
