All-Around Effort Leads JCU Past Three-Time Defending OAC Champions

With a dominant second half performance, John Carroll women's lacrosse snapped a major winning streak and earned a key conference victory.

The Blue Streaks held the University of Mount Union to four goals in the second half, topping the Purple Raiders, 14-11, on Wednesday night in Alliance, Ohio. The victory snaps Mount Union's 15-game OAC regular season winning streak, dating back to the 2014 season.

The Blue and Gold were powered by an all-around attack to defeat the three-time reigning OAC champions in their first conference road match of the season.

With the win, the Blue Streaks advance to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, remaining undefeated on the road this season. JCU went on a four, three and six-goal run to claim their fourth win in their last five games.

Junior Gina Vilsack led the Blue Streaks with a season-high six goals, taking her season totals to 35 goals and 45 total points. This was the eighth game this season that Vilsack has had at least three goals in a match. Grace Curatolo had four goals and two assists.

John Carroll controlled the ball, winning the ground ball battle, 15-9. After losing 11 of the first 15 draw controls, John Carroll dominated efforts in the second half. The Blue Streaks won 11 of the final 12 draw controls to aid their efforts.

In the net, Megan Sarles had 8 saves in 37 minutes. Elyssa Zablo stopped five shots in her 22 minutes in goal.

Sophomore Brooke McQuinn started off the night by netting her first goal less than three minutes into the game. Britt Klosterman then added two of Mount Union's next four goals to follow, jumping out to a 4-1 lead.

JCU answered off of Vilsack's hot hand, netting a hat trick in a span of 5:44. Freshman Colleen Grombala also scored to take a 5-4 lead, collecting her 20th goal of the year. UMU then scored three unanswered to take a 7-5 lead into the half, though JCU doubled Mount Union's ground balls at the intermission (10-5).

After allowing an early goal, the Blue Streaks then went on a five-goal run in a span of 2:21 to take a 10-8 advantage. Curatolo netted three of her four goals in that span, including two in 24 seconds.

Vilsack then added her fifth goal of the evening, right before Mount Union's Bernardi scored her fourth of the evening at the 15:32 mark of the second half. Curatolo, Vilsack and Grombala each added another goal in consecutive order to give JCU a five-goal lead down the stretch.

UMU closed the gap to three goals with 6:45 to go, but John Carroll's defense closed out the night by only allowing one more shot.

Up next, the Blue Streaks will host the Wilmington College Fightin' Quakers on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium.
