John Carroll University women's lacrosse qualified for its third consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a 22-10 victory over the Otterbein University Cardinals on Saturday night in University Heights, Ohio.
The Blue Streaks (11-4, 6-2 OAC) topped the Cardinals (7-8, 4-4 OAC), ensuring postseason representation. JCU has not missed the OAC postseason since the program's founding, dating back to 2015. Â
John Carroll will travel to Alliance, Ohio, to take on the University of Mount Union on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Brooke McQuinn filled the stat sheet, scoring four times and assisting on five more scores.
Colleen Grombala turned in a stellar effort, scoring six times and assisting on three more.
Alexis Guage had four scores and three assists. On Senior Night,
Moira Kelley recorded an assist on a Grombala goal that gave JCU a 21-10 lead.
John Carroll outshot Otterbein 39-21, and won the ground ball battle, 22-18. JCU earned 21 of 34 draw controls.
In the first half, Otterbein scored first on a tally from Katy Williams 4:24 into the first half. John Carroll jumped out to a four-goal advantage following five straight scores over a two-minute period.
The high-scoring affair continued as Otterbein scored twice to make the score 5-3, followed by four more unanswered scores by John Carroll. In that nine-goal span, McQuinn notched four scores.
Sarah Cilano would score twice after the midway point to push the lead to seven.
JCU held that 12-5 lead late in the half, and Otterbein scored twice to lower the advantage to 12-7 at the half. In that first half, the Blue and Gold were paced by McQuinn's four goals and three assists. Guage scored twice and also added three assists.
After the halftime intermission, Vilsack scored at 26:08. She would be followed by Guage and
Colleen Grombala, extending the advantage to 15-7. Otterbein fired back with goals at 20:39 and 17:37, leading to a timeout.
Grombala scored two goals 32 seconds apart, stunting any Cardinals momentum and giving JCU the 17-9 lead. Guage and Grombala combined for a pair of scores to give JCU a 10-goal lead, but Otterbein stopped the running clock with a quick score.
???????Curatolo sent home a goal late to extend the lead back to 20-10. A pair of goals in the waning minutes gave JCU the final winning margin.
The OAC Tournament awaits John Carroll on Wednesday evening in Alliance, Ohio.
