The John Carroll University women's lacrosse team fell to Mount Union in overtime in the opening round of the 2017 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Blue Streaks fell to the top-seeded Purple Raiders, 14-13, in overtime from Alliance, Ohio. This was JCU's third consecutive trip to the OAC postseason tournament.
The 2017 John Carroll season ends at 11-5. JCU won 21 of the match's 29 draw controls, but UMU won 25 ground balls to JCU's 18. John Carroll forced 19 turnovers.
Leading JCU was junior
Grace Curatolo, who had a hand in seven of the 13 goals. Fellow junior
Gina Vilsack had four goals, along with freshman
Colleen Grombala, to aid the Blue Streaks' scoring. UMU had three players with at least three goals, as Katie Elder had a team-high four goals in a six-point effort for the Purple Raiders.
The back-and-forth affair commenced with JCU's
Brooke McQuinn hitting the back of the net 49 seconds into the match. The Purple Raiders answered, but Grombala and Vilsack gave JCU consecutive goals to put the Blue Streaks ahead by two still early in the opening frame. Mount Union scored three straight to regain the lead, only to have JCU return the favor by scoring three goals of their own with the returning help of Vilsack and Grombala, along with
Meghan Harte.
UMU's Elder responded by scoring two of her first half goals within a three-minute span. With the aid of a Danielle Rohrman goal, the Purple Raiders regained the lead, 7-6, with 5:06 remaining in the first half. JCU and Mount Union would each exchange a goal, before JCU's
Sarah Cilano knotted the game up at eight goals apiece with 11-seconds remaining in the opening stanza. The tied match at the midway point saw JCU winning 14 of the match's 17 draw controls, but UMU controlling nine ground balls to JCU's eight.
JCU kept the late first half momentum rolling into the second stanza, scoring two goals less than five minutes into the second half. The Purple Raiders' Alyssa Rydell then made the match even at 10 goals apiece, as Rydell found the back of the net on back-to-back occasions within a 37 second span. Curatolo then put the Blue Streaks back up again, netting her first goal of the match at the 12:56 mark of the second half. McQuinn advanced the Blue Streaks lead to two with 10:47 remaining, only to have UMU and JCU's Grombala exchange goals in the nail-biting affair.
Rydell then netted her third of the match, along with Bernardi scoring her second of the night, to not the matchup at 13 goals apiece with 3:12 remaining. The game stayed tied down the stretch until the final minute. Goalkeeper
Elyssa Zablo made two crucial saves with less than 30 seconds to play, pushing the match into overtime.
In overtime, off of a Mount Union timeout, Danielle Rohrman scored with 1:20 remaining in the overtime period to win the first round match for UMU.
