The John Carroll men's lacrosse team scored early and often in their first match in program history against Heidelberg University, topping the Student Princes by a score of 16-1 in Tiffin, Ohio.
The Blue Streaks, now 9-4 overall and 7-0 in OAC play, would have a fast start, and would not look back.
John Carroll controlled most facets of the game. The Blue and Gold won 38 ground balls to Heidelberg's 19. JCU's defense forced nine unsuccessful clears by Heidelberg. John Carroll won 17 of 20 face-offs, and outshot Heidelberg, 50-6.
Skyler Blake scored five goals in the game, while
Declan O'Grady and
Collin Rice added two each.
Collin Rice scored 58 seconds into the game, followed by a goal 26 seconds later by
Skyler Blake.
Michael Hubert would have a part in the next three, scoring a goal, then assisting
Bennett Gorman and
Skyler Blake on the next two. JCU led Heidelberg 5-0 after 15 minutes.
Skyler Blake would keep the goals coming as he scored the next two goals, assisted by
Ryan Bleggi and
Patrick O'Grady respectively. O'Grady would add another tally, and that would make it 8-0 going into halftime.
This was the first time this season that JCU held a team scoreless at halftime.
Declan O'Grady would score his first goal of the game less than three minutes into the third quarter from a pass by
Collin Rice.
Goals from
MacGregor Roberts, O'Grady, and
Skyler Blake made it 12-0 John Carroll. After a man-up goal by the Student Princes, the Blue Streaks responded with Rice getting his second goal of the game from an assist by
Declan O'Grady. JCU held a 13-1 lead going into the last quarter of play.
JCU kept the scoring going in the fourth quarter.
Keegan Flinter,
Collin Rice, and
Peyton Elliott would each score in the final stanza, and that would be all of the scoring in the game. John Carroll will close out their regular season schedule on Saturday with a trip to Westerville, Ohio to take on Otterbein. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
