Men's Lacrosse Secures OAC Regular Season Title With Win Over Otterbein

After a road win on Saturday afternoon, John Carroll University men's lacrosse brought home the second Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title in program history.

The Blue Streaks (10-4, 8-0 OAC) earned their second consecutive OAC title with a 12-5 victory over the Otterbein Cardinals (8-9, 5-3 OAC) in the final regular season contest in Westerville, Ohio.

Connor Pike led John Carroll with four points, scoring three times and assisting on one goal. Michael Hubert had a hat trick, recording his 100th career point. In net, Kyle Lake surrendered just five goals and made 11 saves.

In a physical game, JCU led most statistical categories. The Blue Streaks outshot the Cardinals 44-28, including 25 shots on goal. The Blue and Gold also won the groundball battle, 33-14. JCU only failed to clear twice, going 18-for-20. Braden Kaib won 15-of-21 .

Declan O'Grady scored just three minutes into play from an assist by RP Whitty. A goal by Jackson Twomey, and man-up goal by Michael Hubert from a Collin Rice feed made it 3-0 Blue Streaks at the 10:39 mark.

After a goal by Otterbein, Skyler Blake received a pass from Connor Pike, and he would bury it to make it 4-1 with 6:46 remaining. The Cardinals would score twice in the final three minutes to make it 4-3 going into the second quarter.

In the second stanza, the Blue Streaks would have another extra-man opportunity. Collin Rice delivered a pass to Connor Pike, and he would finish. 13 seconds later, Jackson Twomey found Skyler Blake, and Blake would get his second goal of the afternoon.

Otterbein would score at the four minute mark, but Connor Pike would answer less than a minute later. Declan O'Grady would add a goal with 11 seconds left to play, and JCU would go into halftime with an 8-4 lead.

Only one goal would be registered in the third quarter, and it would be by the Cardinals. It would be a defensive showcase. Kyle Lake made three saves in the quarter, and he would finish the day with 11 saves.

But the fourth quarter would belong to the Blue Streaks. 3:31 into the last quarter of play, Skyler Blake scored his 39th goal of the season, and his third of the afternoon, on another extra-man opportunity. At the 5:24 mark, Michael Hubert tallied another goal, and he would add another one on an extra-man opportunity just over a minute later. One more man-up score by Connor Pike with 1:02 remaining gave JCU the seven-goal victory. The Blue Streaks scored in 5-of-8 extra-man opportunities.

This is John Carroll's first outright championship in the regular season. The Blue Streaks are just the third team to end an OAC regular season undefeated, following Otterbein in 2014 and Capital in 2015. JCU clinches the number one seed in the OAC Tournament, and they are set to face the fourth seed, Otterbein. The OAC Tournament semifinal is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Shula Stadium.
