Blue Streaks Gain Inside Track In OAC With Thrilling Win Over BW

There are three things guaranteed in life: Death, taxes and dramatic endings in a John Carroll University and Baldwin Wallace men's lacrosse game.

John Carroll landed the last punch in the heavyweight Ohio Athletic Conference bout with Baldwin Wallace, 6-5, at Shula Stadium on Wednesday night.

JCU improves to 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Baldwin Wallace drops to the same mark.

It took until the 6:55 mark of the opening quarter to see the first breakthrough of the contest. A low shot from Michael Hubert broke the scoreless hold, giving John Carroll a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter.

The hosts would add onto their lead, this time with Hubert in a supporting role. Hubert found a cutting Connor Pike through the right side of the defense. Pike took the pinpoint pass and deposited the ball into the top right corner of the Baldwin Wallace cage.

JCU would carry a 2-0 lead into the second quarter, thanks to a shutout performance from Kyle Lake between the pipes. Baldwin Wallace could not get a shot passed Lake in the first quarter with six attempts on frame.

The second quarter was almost a carbon copy of the first through the opening minutes.

It was the hosts again who broke the scoreless quarter when Dakota Thomas powered a mid-range shot between the Baldwin Wallace pipes. Pike grabbed his second assist on the afternoon while pushing JCU to a 3-0 lead with 7:09 to play in the first half.

Just under four minutes later JCU would add another mark to their cause. Declan O'Grady found a soft spot in the defense and slipped a well-placed shot passed the BW goaltender Mike Dizonno. The late tally wrapped up the scoring for the first half, giving the Blue Streaks a 4-0 advantage to take into the locker room at halftime.

Lake continued to impress between the pipes from the Blue Streaks. The net minder held Baldwin Wallace scoreless on nine shots in the first half.

JCU led in the shots category, 13-9, and in ground balls, 14-10. JCU also proved to be strong on the clears with 13-of-14 successful clears in the half. Hubert was the leader with a goal and an assist in the half.

Baldwin Wallace opened the scoring efforts of the second half. Brock Riemenschneider broke Lake's shutout streak with a strong right hand shot opposite stick side. The goal came with 10:35 to play in the third quarter. The visitors would continue to dig away at the JCU lead with another goal. Judson Huston powered a shot past Lake with 3:43 remaining in the quarter.

O'Grady would respond to the late rush from BW. The junior racked up his second goal of the game when he slotted a hard shot in the top right corner of the BW cage. His second tally pushed the Blue Streak lead back to three, giving JCU a 5-2 lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter would come through on the dramatic promises of the cross town rivalry.

BW opened the final frame with three unanswered goals in the first three minutes of the game. Riemenschneider and Alex Juhasz combined for back-to-back tallies that were just 26 seconds apart. At the 12:21 mark of the fourth quarter, the score was tied at five.

The rebuttal would come from Pike when he scored his second tally of the game. Hubert again had the assisting hand when he had a specular pass through the crease to Pike who placed a shot into the back on the BW cage. The score gave JCU a 6-5 lead with 7:18 remaining in regulation.

BW had a flurry of chances, pushing Lake to make some outstanding saves between the pipes for the Blue Streaks. With around 100 seconds left in regulation, a BW shot passed Lake to meet the left post and deflect up the field into safety.

Bryan Neitzelt would be the saving grace for the Blue Streaks when he intercepted a pass with less than 30 second on the clock and BW threatening. Neitzelt worked the ball up the field, securing possession and the victory.

The final buzzer sealed it: John Carroll beat Baldwin Wallace 6-5 in an OAC marquee match up. O'Grady and Pike were the leaders with two goals. Hubert had two assists in the contest.

Lake earns his first victory of the year that included a shutout in the first half and 10 saves.
