Blue Streaks Fight Hard But Fall In Road Test With Mount Union

The previous three times Kelly Morrone and her Blue Streaks had gone beyond 40 minutes of regulation play, the game had ended favorably. But on Wednesday night in Alliance, overtime was not favorable for John Carroll.

JCU fought hard hard but fell, 86-76, against the University of Mount Union at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
 
Katlyn Spahar led the Blue Streaks with 26 points and four rebounds in the contest. Shmoo Pryor set a new career high in points when she contributed 22 markers in the game to go nicely with her two assists. Camille Adelman was the leading rebounder for the Blue Streaks with eight on the night.
 
The Blue Streaks opened up play against the Purple Raiders with a sense of purpose. Pryor buried a three to give the visitors an early advantage. Spahar followed suit with a made jumper of her own to give John Carroll an early 5-2 lead. A cold streak would hit both teams, keeping that the score until the 6:23 mark. Spahar ended the dry spell when she had an impressive drive and layup in the lane.
 
At the midway point, the Blue Streaks and Purple Raiders were deadlocked at 7-7. Both teams would trade scores down the stretch in the opening quarter, but a 4-0 run to end the first quarter gave the Blue Streaks an 18-14 lead.
 
John Carroll kept the good times going in the second quarter.
 
The Blue and Gold went on an 8-0 run to open the quarter, but the Purple Raiders clawed back to cut the visitors' lead to just one point. After John Carroll fell behind, 32-30, Pryor hit another key three pointer to push the score back in the Blue Streaks' favor. John Carroll would follow it up with a 6-0 run. Closing out the half in convincing fashion, the Blue Streaks took a 41-39 lead into the halftime break.
 
JCU went a perfect nine-for-nine from the free throw line in the half while also shooting 42.4 percent from the field. Pryor led the way with an impressive 16 points while Spahar was not far behind with 14 points of her own.
  
Both teams traded scores with trips down the floor to open the second half. Key contributions from the charity stripe by Chelbi Graham kept John Carroll in control during the early moments of the quarter and that advantage lasted throughout the remaining time  Heading into the final stanza, JCU held a 57-52 lead.
 
Mount Union had a fast start in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 58 a side at the 7:05 mark. The two squads slugged it out down the stretch and with 90 seconds to play, the score stood locked at 67-67.

Spahar nailed two free throws with 1:09 left, only to have Erin White tie the game at 69-69 ona  jumper with 39 ticks on the clock. 

Pryor had a look at a game winner in the waning seconds, but her three try was off the mark.
  
Mount Union controlled the extra period, jumping out to an early lead that it would not relinquish, outscoring the Blue Streaks, 17-7, in the extra session.
 
The loss drops the Blue Streaks to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. Mount Union, which had five players in double figures, improved to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
