Box Score The 2016 campaign ended for the John Carroll volleyball team with a three-set loss to Baldwin Wallace University (25-19, 27-25, 25-23) in the quarterfinal round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
JCU was competitive in all three sets but could not close out leads in the final two frames.
Alexa Webber had ten kills, while
Leah Switalski and
Julianne McGervey each had nine.
Kit O'Shaughnessy ended with 35 assists, and
Katie Cosker recorded 20 digs.
With her 35 assists tonight, O'Shaughnessy eclipsed the 4,000 assist mark, becoming the second in program history to do so. The senior ends her career with 4,010 assists, finishing behind only school record holder Meredith McDiarmid (4,190 - 2007-10).
Baldwin Wallace scored the first three points and opened up an 8-3 lead in set one, forcing a JCU timeout. The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 17-8 before John Carroll went on a 4-1 run. The Blue Streaks fought out of a late timeout, rallying to 24-19 before BW closed the set.
In the second set, JCU took early momentum, leading by a score of 17-14. After a BW timeout, the Yellow Jackets stormed back to level things at 17 and 18 before forcing a stoppage at 23-19. John Carroll took the first point out of the break, and scored on their next serve. The teams traded points, and the Blue Streaks closed the gap to 24-23.
JCU briefly took a 25-24 lead, but BW scored three straight points to end the set.
The Blue Streaks led set three, 14-8, but the Yellow Jackets battled to tie it at 14, 15 and 16 before taking the lead. A 6-1 BW run seemingly put the set in their favor, but JCU rallied once more, tying things at 23. Two kills ended the match and subsequently John Carroll's season as well as the careers of six Blue Streak seniors (O'Shaughnessy, Switalski, Cosker, Webber, Madelien McDowell and
Natalie May).
John Carroll ended its season 16-12, marking the fourth consecutive winning season for the program after managing just two winning campaigns between 2002-2012.
