Last year, the Case Western Reserve University Spartans were 100 points better than the John Carroll Blue Streaks.
While John Carroll did not make upÂ
all the ground in this year's rematch, significant strides were made to close the gap.
Swimming and diving returned to University Heights for the 2016-17 campaign Friday night at Johnson Natatorium, as the Blue Streaks fell by a 142-101 score to the visiting Spartans
Results
The first event of the season went in favor of the Blue Streaks as
Carly Adams,
Jenna Latsko,
Anne Crowley and
Amanda Casamatta won the 400-yard Medley Relay with a time of 4:02.60.
After setbacks in the 1000 and 200 Free, Casamatta helped stem the tide with a win in the 50 Free as she touched the wall at 25.40 to take first place. Latsko then followed suit when she competed in the 200-yard IM (2:14.53) for the first time in her collegiate career and got first place.
Ashley Creasap and Julianne Clark then went first and third in the 1-meter diving competition, at which point the Blue Streaks held a slight 57-55 lead.
Case Reserve, which finished the 2016 ranked 21st in Division III, flexed its muscle in the next three races -- the 100 Fly, 100 Free and 100 Back. In those three events alone, the Spartans earned 56 of a possible 57 points and never looked back after that.
JCU still cashed in some victories as the night progressed. Maddie Dolce recorded her first win (5:26.26) in the 500-yard free. Dolce defeated Olivia Picchione, who had won a close race agsinst the John Carroll rookie in the 200-yard Free earlier in the night.
Adams placed first (1:09.02) in the 100-yard Breast, while
Jessica Morrow placed third (1:13.77) for the Blue and Gold.
