As shocking as the goal against was, the answer 36 seconds later by the visiting John Carroll Blue Streaks was the winning score in a 3-2 victory over host Capital University in a semifinal round match of the Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament.
The Blue Streaks, seeded third, had an avenging mindset when taking on second seeded Capital Thursday night in Bexley. Despite a 25-8 shot advantage in the regular season meeting on October 24, the Blue Streaks fell by a 2-1 score to the Crusaders in overtime.
It was John Carroll who got on the scoreboard first as
Jimmy Mattina came through on a cross by
Tristan Lyles in the 31st minute for his fourth goal of the year.
The Blue Streaks seemed as they were heading to the locker room with a one goal lead, but a free kick by Jacob Pulliam ended up being headed in by Alexander Basiakos with less than 90 seconds left in the period. The match was knotted at 1-1 at the break.
Justin Miller seized momentum once again for the Blue Streaks, as he headed a ball crossed by
Jake Lombardo to the far post. The ball actually grazed the post before going in at the 67:24 mark.
As the match entered ints waning moments, Capital kept the pressure on, and it paid off when a blocked shot wound up at the foot of Basiakos, who knifed ina  shot inside the left post for the game-tying tally. With 6:04 to play, the match was deadlocked at 2-2.
It was not remain that way for long.
John Carroll quickly advanced the ball after the restart, and once again Lyles provided the impetus with a long throw in.
Dalton Browsky got to the ball first and headed a shot in to stun the home crowd. It was Browsky's ninth -- and arguably most important -- goal of the year.
JCU then played a strong possession game over the final 5:27 to preserve the win.
The Blue Streaks did not enjoy the same shot advantage (15-11) as they did in October, but it was enough to enable them to advance to a fifth consecutive OAC Tournament championship match. This is John Carroll's 16th appearance in a title match in the 24-year history of the OAC Tournament -- a league record. Â
In the final, the Blue Streaks will face #1 seed Ohio Northern for the fourth time in five years. Ohio Northern won the matches contested in 2011, 2012 and 2013. JCU is 3-5 all-time against the Polar Bears in OAC postseason play.
John Carroll won titles in 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Two of the Blue Streaks titles (2000 and 2007) were won as the #3 seed.Â
