Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brutal Finish Dashes John Carroll Hopes In OAC Men's Soccer Championship Match

There is no change in the forseeable future in the world of soccer, but the brutality of the penalty kick finish claimed yet another victim Saturday night in the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament championship match.

After 110 minutes of actual play, the tournament winner was decided by "PK's", and Ohio Northern made four to John Carroll's three to claim the 2015 title.

The fact that the match reached a shootout seemed a stretch at best as the contest approached the home stretch. The final eight minutes was in actuality where the game was truly decided.

After a scoreless opening 40 minutes, John Carroll got on the scoreboard first when Justin Miller polished off a pass from recent substitute Karol Boryka, and headed the ball into the net.

The score remained 1-0 until the 65th minute, when Jesse Marinaro rewarded a furious possession by Kevin Pachuta to go up 2-0.

Entering the final ten minutes with a two-goal lead, matters seemed in good standing for the third-seeded Blue Streaks. But host and top-seeded Ohio Northern launched an al-out assault, and the tactic yielded results.

The Polar Bears scored twice in the final eight minutes, first on a deflected ball inside the box at the 82:49 mark. The second and most fatal blow came with just 57 seconds left, as Austin Horton sailed a free kick into the box that bounded amongst bodies and was finished off by David Janusz of the Polar Bears.

The score stood at 2-2 heading into extra time.

Neither team could strike the golden goal in the two ten minute extra sessions, setting up the penalty kick shootout.

Ohio Northern started first and never trailed, with goalkeeper Dean McNeil making a diving kick save of Shaq Bridges attempt to force a sixth round.

The game goes down as a tie, leaving Ohio Northern with a 17-4-1 mark and John Carroll with a record of 14-4-2. The Polar Bears get the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, while the Blue Streaks -- who were passed over despite records of 15-4-1 in 2013 and 17-4-0 in 2014 -- must await an at-large bid possibility in an attempt to make the NCAA Division III Championship tournament for the first time since 2007.
