Jesse Marinaro, who parked the game-winning goal in the 76th minute as JCU survived its rivalry game with Baldwin Wallace, takinga  2-1 decision Tuesday night at Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio.
This win, combined with a 2-0 loss by Ohio Northern at Heidelberg tonight, puts John Carroll is a tie atop the OAC standings with the Polar Bears at 5-1 with three matches left to play.
Karol Boryka scored in the 34th minute off a feed from Marinaro, only to have Baldwin Wallace's Ryan Hassell answer less than two minutes later when he pounced on a loose ball in the box.
The score would remain deadlocked for the next 40 minutes as JCU could not take the lead despite a barrage of shots throughout.
It took Marinaro's goal to break the tie, and even then, the Blue Streaks had to fight off two late shot attempts from Baldwin Wallace to preserve the victory. This was John Carroll's fifth consecutive win in the series to increase its all-time lead over its crosstown rival, 31-9-2.
John Carroll had 20 shots while limiting the hosts to nine.
The Blue Streaks improved to 10-3-1 overall and 5-1 in the OAC with their fifth consecutive victory in which they have outscored the opposition 14-4. Baldwin Wallace falls to 4-11-2 and 1-5 in league play.
John Carroll will host third place Capital on Saturday night, October 24, at 7:00 p.m.
