On a rainy senior night, the John Carroll men's soccer team flooded the Capital Crusaders with shots, but the visitors survived the storm and earned a 2-1 overtime victory at Don Shula Stadium.
The Blue Streaks peppered the Crusaders with shot after shot throughout the game, enjoying a wide 25-8 margin in shots, but Capital made the most of its opportunities in the big win.
The loss marked JCU's first in its last 14 games at Shula Stadium. Capital earned just its third win in University Heights in 18 tries.
The game-winning goal came in the 95th minute. Capital's Dominic Zumpone streaked down the far left side of the field before sending a pass into the middle of the box to Chewy Gordon. The freshman left-footed the ball past McIntosh, spoiling senior night for the Blue and Gold.
With the loss, JCU falls to 10-4-1 overall, 5-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while Capital advances to 6-8-1, 5-1-1 in the OAC.
The teams exchanged close shots in the first part of the opening stanza. JCU mustered its most formidable early chance at the 27:32 mark of the first half. Sophomore Dalton Browsky found an opening near the middle of the field about 10 yards outside of the box, firing a shot over goalkeeper Justin Niswonger. Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, the shot hit the crossbar and Niswonger snagged the rebound.
Capital also knocked on the door with several dangerous opportunities off the post and the crossbar early in the half. The Crusaders finally slipped a shot past freshman keeper Liam McIntosh at the 32:44 mark of the first period.
On a corner kick from the right side, Capital's Jacob Pulliam booted a line drive deep into the right side of the box. Hunter Stiger snuck into the zone and headed the ball off a JCU defender and into the top right corner of the net for the first goal of the evening. Â
The Blue Streaks nearly responded with a goal two minutes later. Sprinting forward from the left side, senior Michael Melfi found a crosser from the far side of the field. Melfi headed the ball just wide, nearly sneaking the ball into the left side of the net.
JCU hassled the Capital defense for the rest of the period, but the Crusaders carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. JCU held an 11-6 advantage in shots heading into the break.
The Blue Streaks continued to pressure the Crusaders early in the second half. On a corner kick in the second minute, junior Kirk Ring lofted a pass to senior Jimmy Mattina deep inside the box. Mattina hit the bottom part of the crossbar, narrowly missing an open net.
JCU again came close to scoring in the 56th minute. Sophomore Jacob Lombardo found an open Kevin Pachuta in the deep left corner of the box, but the senior tipped the ball just wide left of the net.
In the 74th minute, Pachuta and the Blue Streaks finally converted on an opportunity. On a corner kick from the right side, Pachuta fired a pass into the middle of the box. Niswonger and two Capital defenders charged to the ball, but misjudged its flight path. Sophomore Jesse Marinaro tiptoed past the Crusaders and tabbed the ball into the open net to tie the game at one.
As the final minutes of regulation ticked away, JCU continued to dominate possession. Lombardo and other Blue Streaks saw several opportunities go for naught, as Capital survived the onslaught and forced overtime.
Within the first 30 seconds of extra time, Browsky headed a hard pass from Pachuta just over the crossbar, nearly ending the overtime early. JCU managed several close shots early in overtime.
Two minutes later, the Crusaders responded with its first shot since its goal in the first half, as Mario Suarez sent a hard shot that McIntosh deflected away. Capital's next shot sealed the game for the visitors midway through the first overtime period.
Marinaro led JCU with one goal and six shots, while Pachuta registered the lone assist and five shots. McIntosh fended off three shots in the loss.
JCU returns to action on Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. road contest at the University of Mount Union.
