John Carroll Tennis Teams Begin To Heat Up In Tampa

Good weather and winning certainly will help brighten the mood of the JCU tennis teams in Tampa
The John Carroll men's and women's tennis teams have taken a page from the book of Walt Whitman in recent days, keeping their faces always toward the sunshine so that the shadows fall behind them.

Rejuvenated by the uptick in weather, both of the Blue Streak squads have collected a pair of wins while down in Tampa, Florida.

The men's team, after bowing to St. John's of Minnesota on Sunday by an 8-1 count, have responded with two solid wins, knocking off Regis (Mass.) on Monday and Susquehanna (Pa.) on Tuesday by identical 9-0 scores.

In picking up their first win of the 2014 campaign, the Blue Streaks overpowered Reis in doubles play, dropping just two games. In singles play, matters were more competitive as Sean Graham had to win in a tiebreaker to complete the sweep in the #3 match.

JCU was also dominant Tuesday in doubles against Susquehanna, winning all three matches by identical 8-1 scores.

Nick Siciliano was particular dominant on the day. After he and partner Jad Abdul-Aal won by an 8-1 count at #2 doubles, Siciliano went out and won 6-0 6-0 at #4 singles.

The Blue Streaks are now 2-5 on the year.

The John Carroll women also bounced back from an 8-1 Sunday loss. After the Blue Streaks fell to the College of St. Benedict, they regrouped and defeated Susquehanna on Tuesday by a 7-2 count.

Against Susquehanna, Catherine Engel and Anna Stein at #1 and Tracy Gibson and Katherine Devine at #2 staked the Blue Streaks a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

The top three singles players -- Engel, Devine and Gibson -- set the tone in the one-on-one matches. The trio combined to drop just four games in their straight set victories. Devine was especially on point in her 6-0 6-0 win at #2 singles.

Ivana Didovic and Josephine Miller also won their matches as the Blue Streaks moved back over .500 at 4-3 on the season.
