Double The Fun For The Blue Streaks As JCU Upsets Baldwin-Wallace And Jennings Gets Record

Lee Jennings had a big hand in beating baldwin-Wallace, and set the JCU scoring record in the process

On most nights, upsetting a first place team would be reason enough to celebrate.

Add in a historic record being broken during the process, and the Blue Streaks were able to double their fun Wednesday night in Berea.

John Carroll went into Ursprung Gymnasium and beat the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets, snapping a seven-game losing streak to their crosstown and Ohio Athletic Conference rivals, 75-73.

Box Score

Lee Jennings (Stow, OH, Stow-Monroe Falls)took to the floor needing 20 points to become John Carroll's all-time leading scorer. She would drop in 28.

Jennings 28-point effort moves her into first place on the all-time scoring list at JCU, surpassing former Streaks guard Shayla Bell, who amassed 1,619 points as a four year starter between 2002-2005.

"It's an honor to be a part of this. JCU has been a great place for me" said Jennings of her record setting night.

Most important about Jennings' record-setting night was that all 28 of those points were needed to complete the upset bid.

After the Blue Streaks found themselves in an early eight-point hole, Jennings scored 12 points in a six-minute stretch to help John Carroll tie the game up at 24-24 with 5:49 remaining in the first half.

It was back-and-forth over the remaining minutes of the opening period, and Baldwin-Wallace held a slim 37-36 lead at the break.

The Blue Streaks quickly took the lead in the second half, and held that lead for a majority of the remaining time. On two occasions, JCU stretched its lead to nine points, the second of which was on a pair of Jennings free throws with 4:34 left that put the Streaks in front by a 69-60 score.

The homestanding yellow Jackets would apply the pressure with a 10-0 run to regain the lead. Catherine Spisak's lay-up gave Baldwin-Wallace a 70-69 advantage -- its first since the start of the half -- with just over three minutes to play in regulation.

The Carroll defense came up big late in the game as the Streaks held B-W to only three points in the remaining 3:16 of the game.

Missy Spahar (Willowick, OH, Mentor Lake Catholic) turned the lead back over to the Streaks with two free throws at the 2:48 mark, after which Jennings pushed the lead out to 74-70 on a free throw and a lay-up.

B-W's only points in the final three minutes came by a three-ball from Olivia French with 13 ticks of the clock remaining that turned up the drama meter.

Emilee Ritchie (Stow, OH, Stow - Monroe Falls ) split a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left, allowing Baldwin-Wallace on last chance. After a time out and a JCU foul (it had one to give), French again tried to be the hero but her three-attempt drew iron but glanced away.

Jennings was not alone freshmen in providing John Carroll with the ingredients for victory on this evening. Allison Lustig (Palo Alto , CA, Archbishop Mitty) posted 11 points while fellow frosh Spahar added 16 points and eight boards.

"I thought they did a great job of keeping their composure," said JCU head coach Kristie Maravalli of her freshmen. "They got the job done by hitting some three's late and making big stops."

Spahar's 16-point effort marks her 15th double-digit game of the season.

Ritchie, who netted three triples of her own, also finished in double figures with 14 points. Ritchie has made three or more three pointers in 14 of the Blue Streaks 20 games this year and is shooting a deadly .409 from deep this season.

John Carroll improved to 12-10 overall and 6-7 (7th place) in the OAC.

Baldwin-Wallace, who falls to 16-7 overall and 11-5 in the OAC, was paced by Amanda Schroeder with 24 points on 10-13 shooting from the floor.
